I recently bought the Ashes to Ashes box sets and have just finished watching the complete series 1, 2 & 3. Like when I watched Life On Mars, most of Ashes To Ashes was new to me, as I had only ever seen a couple of episodes. I could identify more with Ashes to Ashes as I can remember the early 1980s. Compared to Life On Mars it felt more vibrant and colourful and dare I say flashy - unsurprising as it was 1980s Thatcher era London compared to 1970s gritty Manchester. Keeley Hawes character of Alex Drake worked very well opposite the Gene Hunt character, the chemistry between them brought something new to the show that was obviously not there with the Sam Tyler character in Life On Mars. Which is better Life On Mars or Ashes To Ashes? - Well, I think good arguments could be made for either series, probably depends on what period you remember most (or most fondly). For me I prefer Ashes to Ashes, it just had more of a feel good vibe than the brilliant Life On Mars, oh and Keeley Hawes is much more beautiful to look at than John Simm! So if you are a fan of what was good about the 1980s - music, cars, clothes, etc, then I recommend buying the box sets. The Saint

Pleased to see you've finally got around to it Mr Templar
I think Ashes To Ashes starts off well with Alex's references back to Sam Tyler defining the series' origins, yet it quickly develops into a series in its own right. Anyone that hasn't seen LoM could bypass those references and still watch A2A as a series virtually independently.
Choose between LoM and A2A? Very difficult for me as I experienced both and have fond memories of both the 70s and the early 80s for very different reasons. What can't be denied though is that the fashions of the 80s are far better than the 70s and certainly in A2A this is portrayed very well.

I like the fact that A2A brought the series to a satisfactory conclusion and explained who Gene was and what had happened to Sam & Annie. I am a bit of a thicky and need stuff like that explaining to me I was a little confused as to how Alex Drake found herself back in the 80s after waking up in her own time for example. I like them both but LOM has the edge for me as I prefer the music.

Ive never seen A2A, except for s few minutes of one episode when it was on tv! So can't really comment on it, I will have to buy box set. As for explaining what happens to Sam and Annie' I hope it's not going to spoil it for me! I like to think that at the end of Life on Mars' Sam went back to 73' and he and Annie lived happily ever after- well we can all dream, can't we!

I'll second that. I wouldn't wait for a Blu Ray release as it may never happen. Jump in now. It's great viewing.

I have just taken delivery of Ashes to Ashes today and will hopefully start watching it this weekend. I am looking forward to it now as I like programmes/series set in the 1980's so it will be interesting to see the cars, fashions etc. of the time again, and I love 80's music anyway
