Anyone seen the trailers for Deutschland 83? (You can't really miss them!) on Channel 4. It starts tomorrow (Sun 3rd)
The Channel 4 blurb is: "It’s 1983. The Cold War is heating up. Russian SS20 Missiles in East Germany are pointed West, American Pershing II Missiles will soon be placed in West Germany, to point East. The very real threat of nuclear conflict looms. Against this perilous political backdrop and set amid real events, DEUTSCHLAND 83, a gripping coming-of-age story and a suspenseful, fast-paced thriller, follows Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), a 24 year old East Germany native, who is thrust from the world as he knows and sent over the wall to the West as an undercover spy for the Stasi. Hiding in plain sight in the West German army, he must gather the secrets of NATO military strategy while trying to resist the pleasures that the West has to offer. Everything is new to him, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harbouring secrets".
I will probably give it a whirl. The period setting will probably be interesting. Gotta be better than all the 'bonnets and crinolines' on ITV and BBC! Be interested to know what other board members think after the first ep...

I'd already set my Sky+ for this. GDR history fascinates me. I have friends in Berlin who were West German & others who were former GDR citizens. Interesting to speak to them about the old days. It wasn't all bad in the East, apparently. "Don't feel sorry for us!" They say. If you ever visit Berlin make sure you go to the Stasi museum. Very interesting.

Sounds interesting Little Owl, I might just have a butcher's at it.
At least there's no more Downton for it to clash with.
Sam.

Absolutely; I think BBC & ITV have got stuck in a groove where they think all people want is costume dramas: Downton (yes ST, thankfully over!), Poldark, coming this year we've got Young Victoria, War & Peace.... yawn!! So at least Channel 4 are trying to do something a bit fresh, and I will tune in with interest. Wonder if they will subtitle it or dub it? Much prefer subtitles, after a while you forget they're there, and you retain the original tone; dubbing always sounds 'shoehorned' in. Also good to see new actors getting a break.

*SPOILER ALERT*
Well, watched it last night. Intriguing start. The script does a good job of getting you on the lead characters side, and empathising with him.
He is supposed to be 24, and that is probably a good plot device; already early on his naivety has caused him to take risks, and fumble tradecraft. The implications of the error at the end of this ep will no doubt spool out over the series, or come back to bite him at the end!
Using the aunt to recruit him gives a domestic leverage / bribery aspect, and shows just how single-minded / ruthless they were.
Promising start, and I hope it's wrapped up in one series, and not stretched out over several series. (Homeland!)

I watched it. It was quite good. The subtitles were bloody schnell though! My German isn't exactly fluent, but I can get by if they speak clearly & slowly enough. This was like they were all on Coke.
Incidentally, the opening scenes in the MfS/Stasi offices were filmed in the actual Stasi offices, which are now the museum that I mentioned in my previous post.

I might have a look at this, but if it's an American production, I might not like it. There are very few modern U.S. films and TV shows I can take to. Like Barry, I too am fascinated by G.D.R. history, ( The other week, I was trying to find out what German bar's and breweries were like in the G.D.R. era ) Anyway I will see if Deutchland 83 is on the channel four player.

I will check this out too if I can, quite like this sort of Cold War stuff, - I've been to Berlin and round the old Eastern Sector including the fascinating Stasi museum.
The old East Germany may not have been as bad as some made out, although according to a Eastern European car book I have, it took 10 yesrs for someone to take delivery off a brand new car they ordered and even then it was some old naff Wartburg or Trabbie!
At least it probably wasn't as bad as todays North Korea - they've taken communism to new heights!
