Anyone a fan of Round the Horne?
I've been using the rather excellent (& free) new BBC radio player app for a few months. Its works on smart phones & tablets. I was too young to remember RtH when it was broadcast & I'm a recent convert. It's rather good. I also download Steptoe, Hancock, Morcambe & Wise plus numerous 'normal' radio shows that I can't listen to live. The downloads last for 30 days & can be listened to offline. I'm sure some of you may already be onto this, but I thought I'd post it for those who aren't.

Good call Barry. RTH is a good old series. Hancock was the best of the lot and great to see it being revived. Are all 67 episodes of RtH available ?
Gene.

Julian and Sandy, the two camp characters played by Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick featured in Round The Horne, are still very funny. If you've not heard them before they use a lot of polari, the word used for slang used by gays to communicate at a time when homosexuality was illegal, in the same way criminals used slang to avoid being overheard. The scripts are pretty racy for their time.

The broadcast one show every week on BBC 4extra & this is then put on the radio app to be downloaded. They cycle every 30 days, so there's usually about 4 on there at a time. One being added each week.

yes I'm a fan of RTH. Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick were brilliant in it. I sometimes listen to it on Radio 4 Extra. The Julian and Sandy bits are great and what about Ken's Ramblin' Sid Rumbo, hilarious ! I bought some episodes at a car boot sale about ten years ago, but I'm not sure how many I've got, I'll have to check.

After seeing this thread I listened to this 1976 LP of Julian and Sandy on youtube earlier, it's several of their RTW sketches redone with Barry Took standing in for Horne. There's a Best Of Rambling Sid Rumpo LP on there as well, absolutely filthy stuff it is!

I'm a big fan of the Radio player app too, and Radio 4 Extra. I also missed out on these 'oldies' first time round, but when you listen to RTH, you can hear where the roots of modern radio comedy are. For example, I've heard the Now Show cast sometimes saying (after something a bit corny) 'We're turning into Round the Horne! You can also hear Kenneth Horne valiantly trying to not let Kenneth Williams run away with the show - he would have upstaged anyone given half a chance! As regards the App itself, I use mine on my Android phone. Mostly it's okay, but sometimes programmes get 'stuck' in the downloading column and won't move across to downloaded. I've found if this happens, uninstall the App, then reinstall it again, and that usually does the trick.
Other 'modern day' comedy on there I'd recommend: Cabin Pressure, Absolute Power, Bleak Expectations, Old Harry's Game.
