A while ago BBC4 did a short series on different musical genres, one of them had some footage of my Grandad in his home studio which I've never seen until today, having missed the programme when it was first shown - my brother sent me a youtube link so I thought I'd post it here... John Hassell was my Mum's Dad and lived in Nassau Road, Barnes with his second wife Felicity, he was almost completely blind so relied on her a lot, she'd drive us round in their '73 Mk1 Granada Estate and I remember riding round London with her quite often as she delivered various acetates and white labels to studios and band's rehearsal rooms. Happy days. They also produced and engineered three of Jasper Carrot's live LPs amongst lots of other live recordings. Villain

Very interesting Villain. I remember this unusual clip from when the documentary was first on in 2012.
Dennis Bovell's actor brother Brian played Billy in the channel 4 series 'Prospects'.

Great clip Villain. I can see the likeness! That clip is priceless for you I expect. Gene. It's all in the genes, Gene, if ya know what I mean I think it was filmed around 1980/81 but I'm not 100% sure. On family visits to Nassau Road I can remember all kinds of strange people wandering in and out of the house. It's no surprise that Grandad and Felicitiy's daughter Jackie (my Mum's half sister) ended up marrying actor come music producer Philip Decosta who started his own studio up with the royalties from his part in 'Scum'. The family history on my Mum's side is quite complicated with divorces, remarriages, secret offspring and various / nefarious connections to showbiz types along the way. One day I might be able to untangle it all but the biggest mystery of all is how exactly my Grandad managed to bag himself such a large and very expensive house in Barnes after the war and set up his recording business there. I've asked my Uncle (Mum's brother also named John Hassell) and he hints at Grandad being a 'slightly more than successful' spiv during the war, looting bombed out houses in West London and flogging it on the black market. I'd love to know the full SP on that, he must have done something right though as he put my Mum through drama school when she was a kid. She was all set to be a singer / dancer in the theatre but when her first serious boyfriend died from epilepsy she kind of went off the rails a bit and gave it all up, from what I can gather this is about the time my Grandad cut her off so to speak, then when she met and married my Dad later on it got worse and created a lot of family tension which didn't stop until just before he died in 1991. Funny things, families! Villain
