I remember watching the Hancock TV film years ago but it I didnt realise how long ago it had been first screened. I remember actor Alfred Molina played Tony. I read last week either on this forum or more likely on Twitter that one of the Galton And Simpson pair chinned the guy who wrote the Steptoe tv film because of its inaccuracies. Harry Corbett's daughter fought the BBC for years to get changes made in the film.
Charles.

Very interesting article. I like Paul Merton, an intelligent and funny, comic. I like Paul Merton. He has huge respect for the comedians of old. Charles.

Apparently the dvd of 'The Curse Of Steptoe' has been withdrawn from sale & will never be broadcast again on tv, this is even after it was repeated on BBC4 with cuts, then repeated again with further cuts.
I don't like these tv biographical films at all, the one about Hattie Jacques & John Le Mesurier was on again recently, very often they're muckraking exercises that take liberties with events & usually the performers look & seem nothing like the people they're portraying.

Has anyone seen the recent Hancock specials on Gold ? It featured a look at Tony's career >>>Very Nearly An Armful<<< presented by Jack Dee. This special was made as a precursor to two Hancock Half Hour episodes which have been colourised. Episodes that have been colourised are: Twelve Angry Men The Blood Donor

It was made as a precursor to two Hancock Half hour episodes which have been colourised. I haven't seen the colourised episodes, Del. However I thought the documentary with Dee was excellent, particularly the documents/script notes that were unearthed that gave an insight into how Tony worked. Unlike some of the Channel 5 retrospectives where they drag out Z list names to comment on things they don't have a clue about, the Hancock one featured real fans and experts. They did a good job. Will have to check out the colourised shows soon.

I enjoyed the special and it filled in a lot of detail regarding Tony's life and career. I previously had only seen bits of Hancock in Black and White, so was keen to view these two episodes to see how well the colourisation process fared. I don't mind black and white tv at all, however the colourised episodes look great and only add to Hancock's appeal. I think they did a great job on them personally and I do hope they get round to doing more. Not a bad way to view two classic episodes in full for the first time They are available on Now tv and I'm sure Gold will replay these in the schedule.

I've watched all of these recently Del, plus "The Rebel" earlier today and maintain that Tony was just superb in the same way that Ronnie Barker was with his comic timing and delivery of lines.
I know that alcohol played it's part but he was clearly a tormented soul & I'm not sure what came first, the torment or the alcohol, one clearly fed the other.
Spotted some Sweeney actors too such as James Ottaway in "The Blood Donor" & John Vyvyan from "Faces" to name but two.

Did they do a good job on these colourised episode's don't really get/watch Gold and only seen the trailer. It does look good from the trailer so wonder if any more B&W programmes may get that treatment? A talent sadly taken too soon.

I thought they were very good. I believe they had to individually colour each frame. They used colour photographs from the era to help get a marker. Its a hell of a lot of work but I feel they did the show justice. I would love to see the same process applied to the early Steptoe episodes.
