Good episode, this.Although it has that defeatist, downbeat feel right from the word go.Although this could be hindsight-as we view it now,we know the series was coming to an end as a whole.
I watched most of this episode this morning on ITV4 (it may have been edited in places-I was still half asleep),and I'd forgot about a couple of smart lines from Regan.
(knock knock knock:door is answered)
Jack:Police.
Eve Fisher:I'd never have guessed. And you want to come in.
Jack:(sarcastically):Well, get a couple of chairs and we'll talk out here.
They enter the flat.
Eve Fisher:Is the lift fixed yet?
Jack:(pant pant pant).

Should this have tied in better with 'Jack or Knave'?
They were filmed several months apart, which didn't help.
In more recent times, the two episodes might have been merged together as an interwoven two-hour story.

Nice bit as well right at the end, where Eve Fisher is really laying into Regan, giving him what for....."you ruin people's lives and you don't care, never think about anything else"...that kind of thing.Interesting then that the camera pans onto Haskins, who seems to be listening but is still vacant:obviously he is imagining Doreen saying the same things to him, who's life is in severe trouble due to the police, although in a completely different way. Also clever if you watch this scene is the different reactions of Jack and George.Whilst George is squirming and very uncomfortable,Regan just stands stock still, detatched.A very heavy scene.

Yeah I like this episode! It's kinda different than all the other episodes. It's interesting with the two different story lines going on! It's a bit quirky at the beginning when it shows Doreen with the doll in the pram and plays the sinister music, reminds me of a hammer house of horror episode or armchair thriller lol.. The bit where Doreen is reminiscent and is talking to Frank with a full head of hair is quite funny, but I agree the best scene is at the end where Eve fisher is giving Regan grief and the Camera pans on to Haskins, you can sense and feel the tension in the whole scene, and from Haskins, like he's just about had anough himself, but at the same time feels empathy towards Jack!

Excluding Hearts & Minds, which I consider to just be an add on episode to the regular run. I think this was probably the last one filmed, you can tell it is a late one by Haskins having a Rover SD1 rather than a P6, to my knowledge this is the only occasion he is seen in an SD1 in the entire run of the Sweeney.
I agree with the comments above, I think it has a very "end of term" feel about it, you can sense that time is up for the series after it's 4 series run.

No matter how many times i’ve seen it, the first shot of the doll still gives me a chill.

Just caught up with this one today on ITV 4 and agree its a great episode. I like the downbeat end of an era, 1978 feel to it.
