For me, as for many other fans of The Sweeney, this is simply the worst episode of the entire series, isn't it

The chase scene is so clearly not on a public road and is so unrealistic compared with the rest of the series. The plot is more a Professionals kind of storyline too I think.

It is different to the rest of the series but it's still The Sweeney and i'd rather watch it than many other things on today's listings.
Does this episode get a bit of a bad press ? I think so. It was supposed to be a light hearted affair that expanded The Sweeney's previous elements of humour with the inclusion of Morecambe & Wise. The ending really lets it down IMO. Its way too silly even for a light hearted affair.
Did the experiment work ? Looking back now it stands out as completely different to the rest and is judged as poor when stacked up against the rest of the series. Some of it isn't too bad and comparable to other S4 episodes which were trying new things like mixed storylines. I would wager it was very well received at the time.

I get Hearts and Minds is a light hearted episode and as Del Boy says it does have good elements, The Sweeney was coming to an end and Thaw/Waterman wanted to repay a favour to Morecambe and Wise. However compared with other episodes from Series 4 let alone 1-3 it's very poor. The plot holes are obvious, the comedy doesn't quite come off and the awful car chase at Millbrook.... Compared with the car action in Stoppo Driver or Faces it makes them look like amateurs which they weren't. Only really Drag Act and Latin Lady come close to being as poor still as said it's still enjoyable and beats the hell out of most TV drama made nowadays.

I've never been keen on this episode myself either. For me, it's definately the worst one in the four series that were made.

It was an additional episode. Every other season had 13 episodes, this was tagged onto the final season.

Browsing youtube I happened to spot a familiar face on a video thumbnail, it was the ventriloquist dummy used by Morecambe & Wise in this episode & is part of a M&W exhibition in Lancaster. Eric Morecambe's son mentions it & The Sweeney at about 1min 30.

Excellent find, Arthur.
Nice to see M&W items being preserved and on show for all to see.
