A strong episode from series 4,although our Scottish friends are somewhat stereo-typed in 'Hard Men'.One thing that has struck me after re-watching this episode is that if you were watching for the first time in 1978 on terrestrial TV,in parts it would have been a real struggle to grasp some of the things being said between the Scots in the episode.I had to rewind a good few times in certain scenes and I still struggled to decipher some sentences......
Another great performance by a guest star, this time in James Cosmo as D.S.Freeth.Right from the off he depicts a hard,straight-backed Scottish copper,a 'this is the way we do things in Glasgow' type.Plenty of comedy element in Hard Men,and although we have the battle of the squad attempting to capture the villains,we have a battle going on between Regan and Freeth (with Carter also involved),and an especially nice bit where Freeth has been frugal with his information to the squad about Joe Boyd, and Regan gives him the line "I've had just about enough of this, you Scotch git".Nobody could deliver a line like that quite like John Thaw could, just on the edge of his temper being lost.Excellent.
Very much a light-and-dark episode, with some laughter but a serious element in there-the part where Joe Boyds' henchmen set the villain alight highlights the dark part. And would Freeth really have agreed with Boyd on the phone to the "you take one,and we take one-we have to set an example" deal?Perhaps another example of the way Scottish Police operate?
Not sure I understand the part in the final scene where George says "he rang rings around us though, didn't he Guv?".Of course you can do that if you withhold vital bits of info from your team. But overall, another top episode in my humble opinion."and the next person that calls me Jock gets his head taken off".Brilliant!!!

I watched this one last night and thought it was a sort of OK episode. The story was a bit thin, it was basically, two Scots villains coming to London to attempt a kidnap and going to the wrong address. Good acting from James Cosmo as Freeth and, again, some good location shots, I would guess filmed in early 1978.
The squad car is now a Mark 2 Granada, I always preferred the Mark 1 personally, and thought it had more style, and the Mark 3 Cortina 2.0GT has been replaced with a Mark 4 1.6 or 2.0 GL

I like the sound of West End Tales. Never heard of it before.

A brief history of 'electric soup'. A young Celtic fan is seen with a bottle of Eldorado, the tonic wine that amuses Regan.
