If you've ever wondered what happened to 'First Youth' Perry Balfour, he runs an interesting looking camp site in France. He is the son of actor Michael Balfour, a familiar face in many British films. Apparently Michael Balfour became a circus clown after acting & founded his own circus, his son Perry was also a clown. The 'first youth' credit in Loving Arms must refer to the lad who holds up the newsagents & not, as you would assume, Ray Winstone's mate ( Ray Winstone is credited as 'second youth' ), you can see the resemblance to Perry Balfour as he is today in the photo on this page- www.retrosellers.com/features459.htm

Interesting episode this one I thought. The story about the fake guns, made by the elderly engineer, looking after his sick wife, who had no idea what they were going to be used for. I seem to remember seeing the gun maker in something else at about the same period and I cant remember what it was.*
Also the background music was different to the norm, a sort of pub rock 70s sound, and the great shots of the city at night.
Another one made in 75, NHK 295M was in it, I would guess filmed in the autumn, judging by the trees and the cold looking locations.
Best line "Back to the big, bad world of bent bog rolls!"
*Update - Ive just remembered - he was called Clifford Kershaw and he was the mayor in the episode of Ripping Yarns with Michael Palin called the Testing of Eric Olthwaite

A bit of an underrated episode this for some reason. I think it's got a lot to recommend it, decent storyline, plenty of great shots of London and some great scenes with Regan and Haskins.

There's a distinct contrast of acting styles & character types in this episode, the naturalistic performances of Clifford Kershaw & Anne Dyson as the meek elderly Northern couple involved with Ward & Blakeney, spiv & small time crook played in more theatrical style by Roy Sone & Alan David. Shame Roy Sone didn't do much acting work, I think he is the best thing about this episode & was also memorable playing the grass Mickey Fielder in 'Law And Order'.

I always thought Regan balling out the copper who stopped to pick up the dropped revolver and thereby preventing more deaths with it was well out of order. He half realises it later on. Also Tarrant got shot in this episode!
