Sue Lloyd (Arlene Baker) spotted out on the Embankment in 1967 some 9 years before starring in The Sweeney: Gene. Young bloke behind her is a sort of proto skinhead/suedehead. She's not going to get very far on that bicycle eh?

I stumbled upon an article this evening about Sue Lloyd, who played Arleen Baker in this episode. I never realised she was married to Ronald Allen (Dr Who / Crossroads / The Avengers etc). Ronald passed away in 1991 and Sue in 2011. Both of their funerals took place at the same Crematorium as the late great George Cole (Reading Cemetery in Caversham). I remember the two of them being in Crossroads. I knew they were married, perhaps they got together as a result of working in the soap. Ronald Allen had previously worked in another BBC soap which lasted about five years I believe.

Some great humour in this episode, particularly when Regan tells Carter that if he'd got promotion he would be probably be doing things like "guarding the mayor's chain and nicking the local poof outside the recreation ground toilets" Just caught the repeat of this on ITV4..... as expected, this scene was abruptly cut to remove the 'poof and recreation toilets' reference!!

I think this line is problematic not so much for the word 'p**f' but the suggestion that in any given town there's just one gay man & you'll find him cottaging. However this was the prevailing attitude of many at the time, not that long after the Sexual Offences Act of 1967, stories of high profile figures being caught in public toilets. By odd coincidence I made a post on the Steptoe And Son thread earlier, Wilfrid Brambell being someone who was arrested for such behaviour. Not sure what happens these days, the police turn a blind eye to 'dogging' despite the problems it can cause but I expect this has always been the case for heterosexual activity in public.
There are an unbelievable number of adverts on ITV4 player

There are an unbelievable number of adverts on ITV4 player The local press here in S Yorkshire have run a couple of front page stories recently about the crackdown on 'dogging' sites and the like.
According to the press reports (no may not be entirely accurate) - it was initially up to the Local Authority 'Neighbourhood Team' to deal with it.
It went on to say that there wasn't a law that directly dealt with such things - and the Police had to utilise other laws - under Public Decency / Trespassing / and whatever else they could come up with, to clear these groups away. As for people hanging around Public Toilets - the Police these days seem to use the same either the Vagrancy Laws brought in to deal with Beggars on the street or Laws surrounding Harrassment.
In my Doc making days in the early 90s, I spent 3 weeks (with a small Film Crew) following Prostitutes about and then another 3 on the other side of the fence with the Police 'Anti-Vice Unit' in Nottingham.
During one evening, the Vice Unit were called away to a group of people who had met up in a park woodland. On arrival we were greeted with a scene that could (or should) have been in the Whicker Man; everyone wearing Sheep/Pig/Dog/Cat masks
In this case; it transpired the group had picked up a streetworker, offered her a hefty amount of cash to let everyone join in. All the cops could do them for was outraging public decency and move them on. There was no proof money had exchanged hands, the lady of the night was well known to the police and she was let on her way.
Shortly after - Nottingham Police introduced a system where they would keep records of Number Plates of cars involved - and publish them in the local paper to name & shame. Sales in the Nottingham Evening Post rocketed thereafter.
