Absolutely agree it's a strong story and definitely a 'Top five' episode. There's so many interesting strands in this story- the slippery lawyer, the back story of the disabled policeman (and his wife's infidelity), the dream like recall of Eddie Jackson's shooting, Regan's guilt, it's just so well put together from a technical and plot angle. Anthony Heaton and Maureen Sweeney are great as the Medhurst's, and as Cartman says the back drop of the drought gives it an added visual appeal (retrospectively). And of course Johnny Shannon as the night club grass just gives the story another shine, and is typical Sweeney in so much as the casting and attention to detail shown to supporting characters. This episode goes all the way up to eleven :D I like the scene where Mason and Regan are on the roof top, you can tell it was a scorcher that day. Yes, it's a great back drop and no doubt it was intended that way. 60s/70s film and television are very often visually appealing compared to today in my opinion. Oh and the Thames looks like a stream!

Actor Anthony Heaton, who played Billy Medhurst in this episode, sadly died at the very young age of 39 in April 1987. It's exactly thirty years ago this month.

Those smudges are excellent. They just show you how hot it was in that amazing summer, and '75 wasn't too shabby as well. June right through to the last week of August were pretty much unbroken sunshine and on looking for some more details, there were fifteen consecutive days from 23 June to 7 July where temperatures reached 32.2 °C (90 °F) somewhere in England.
The chase scene with Billy Medhurst was probably not what you'd ideally be doing in those temperatures!

TV Times listing for repeat on Jan 5 1981. Btw, the 'See Inside Television' mention on the Sweeney episode is a listing error, I've checked the Inside Television section and there are no articles on The Sweeney, though there is for 'Shelley'.

I've just watched this episode. Not one I can remember seeing before which is highly unusual.
As others have said, it's right up there with the best episodes
The Ashby-Jones lawyer is a classic character. Upper class but obviously a wrong un with those appalling green lens glasses - what was he thinking? Might as well have a tattoo on his forehead with the words You Cannot Trust Me.
Billy Medhurst and his missus were brilliantly cast too
I was also intrigued by the music and effects whenever we saw the flashback to the scenes when Eddie Jackson was shot and left permanently disabled.
And, as Bojan Scores says elsewhere, the Johnny Shannon cameo is the icing on the cake. Interesting to see him playing a grass rather than a gangster - he's wonderful as always.
Top notch telly.

Its a great episode. BTW The chippy where Billy gets some 70s scoff is still a chippy to this day. Get down there for a bit of location spotting and a portion of chips to take out. "Gis' a chip Billy"

Never twigged until now but the smudge of George Roper on the TV Times listing, it could be titled 'In From The Cold'

Gots to be worth a day trip
Where exactly is it?
I keep meaning to go and watch Brentford FC before they move grounds (end of next season) so could probably do a two for one. Perhaps even re-enact the scene with some friends?
