Has anyone been watching this excellent ITV series based on the story of the Ripper...? The period ambiance and details are very good, although one or two of the wigs are little obvious. It all looks suitably grim, even more so than the 'Red Riding' version that was on several years ago. The locations and particularly the interior of the police station are very atmospheric. The casting is very good with David Morrisey, Toby Jones, Liz White, Lee Ingleby, Jill Halfpenny, Katherine Kelly, Stephen Tomkinson, John Henshaw and Daniel Mays amongst others. Most of the cars used look brand new, but then this is to be expected when producers are searching for usable period vehicles. Villain

Villain Villain, it always irks me that when making programmes like this they don't make any attempt to age the vehicles. I was around in that era and lots of vehicles were a bit manky with rust, filler and fibreglass patches. They could fake this without ruining the vehicles I'm sure.

I thought it was very well done, concentrating on the victims and not brushing over the mistakes/attitudes of the Police at the time. The same can't be said of the This Is Personal series with Alun Armstong which seemed to suggest George Oldfield was treated unfairly by the media.
I enjoyed the Red Riding series but thought it odd that they used Daniel Mays and David Morrisey playing different roles in The Long Shadow, although John Henshaw played a newspaper editor in both.
As someone who lived close to the area at the time of the crimes and went to school with one of the victims, I found the recreation of the fear the public felt very accurate.

Haven't seen it, will try and get it on catch up. I thought the Alun Armstrong series was quite good, apart from the way George Oldfield was portrayed. The investigation was incompetent in the extreme and several promising leads were ignored. The Wearside Jack tapes completely sent it off in the wrong direction and were given too much credibility. Two or three women who survived attacks by Sutcliffe gave decent descriptions and confirmed that he wasn't a Geordie, but this was discounted

Ask Gene for example ..................

Many instances, going right back to Christie at Rillington Place, the White house farm case with Jeremy Bamber was another.Incidentally, Oldfield was also in charge of the M62 coach bombing investigation in 1974 and this was another mess. Judith Ward was wrongfully convicted despite several independent witnesses confirming she was in Oxfordshire at the time and could not have planted the bomb

Villain The Red Riding books by David Peace ( 1974, 1977, 1980 and 1983) are well worth getting hold of too. He has a hard-hitting writing style, no doubt influenced by Stan Barstow, Alan Sillitoe and the Angry Young Men authors of the 60s.
