At an event outside on the lawns at work for the students there was a music DJ and the music pumping out was all 1980s. I thought it was odd that they would play that music for an audience of 18-21 yr olds mostly (apart from the odd mature age student and teacher... and we love the mature age students so don't think they are 'odd' at all ). One of the staff from 'music' said that the 1980s is the 'safe' era of music that will generically satisfy the majority of an audience.
Good point about the 80s being safe generically. I hadn't thought of this before and, thinking about it, it does make sense, although I think the early 80s (80-83) still had the edginess and brilliance of the late 70s clinging on. From them on, though, yes, very safe and, IMO, a bit bland

True and Gold by Spandau Ballet seem to get played to death on stations like GHR, Gold and Absolute 80s Vi

It is this very reason of a short playlist and overplaying songs that I rarely listen to radio stations these days. A few years ago I used to listen to Jack FM and Jack UK which wasn't too bad but the ads used to get on my thrupenny bits so I regularly resorted back to Youtube or saved albums.
Karma Chameleon? Don't get me started, that seems to be top of the list for any 80s radio or TV station. And as for the video, they'd have you believe the paddle steamer is somewhere in the deep south of the "Good ol' U S of A" when it is actually on the Thames at Weybridge, Surrey!

I avoid all the era radio stations as they all seem to have limited playlists. Even Capitol Gold which ended up as Gold plays the same old small playlists wearing out 60s and 70s classics.

It is really lazy programming isn't it. I think back to the songs that were in the Top 20 over the 1980s and it changed weekly yet most don't get played on commercial radio.

I think rightly/wrongly mainstream radio will play the 'hits' in a safe format their listeners enjoy, whether or not the lesser chart hits for an act or their more experimental stuff the die hard fans know, would be more interesting to hear it's irrelevant for these stations as the hits drive listeners and if they're commercial revenues too. There's always good things to discover old and new.
