Nice photos Arthur.
I must say looking at those TV Times listings for that evening, they look a hell of a lot more interesting than what they put on these days. I find a lot of todays stuff just plain annoying myself.
Charles.

8½ pence for a first class stamp? I'd be telling Hughie Green where he can stick his clapometer!
Daylight robbery!

Patrick Troughton may have been the most mis-cast actor in any Sweeney episode, he's described as 'a truly terrifying villain' by the TV Times though he's anything but as he struggles with lines like 'I've tumbled you Alan, you're all bunny' & 'I'm not sitting around like some jaffa'. I came across this article about the Fladge ( called 'Madge' in the TV Times listing, a mistake or done deliberately to avoid offending readers? ) who was starring as another prossie in the 1963 film 'The Informers' currently showing on talkingpicturestv, it's a superior crime film with a number of Sweeney actors including Garfield Morgan. 'Loves scrubbing' the article says

Spot on there Arthur, Troughton was about as terrifying as warmed up blancmange.
My favourite Dr Who mind but badly miscast here, I cringe when he's trying the rhyming slang!

I'd say they should have cast either Maurice Colbourne or Bryan Marshall as Crofts. The former had just done the BBC1 Play For Today "Gangsters" which spawned the TV series a year later and I reckon if he had played the villain, he wouldn't have shown a single shred of remorse in knowing he had accidentally had a cop's wife killed. The latter was another esteemed tough guy actor who did well as a former bent cop in Out and also tried to kill Doyle in the Professionals episode Hunter/Hunted.

Yes indeed Troughton is a tad miscast. Then again he's a bit of a wannabe, so perhaps it was intentional?
What really struck me, looking at this episode through twenty first century eyes, is Jack's approach to bereavement....
He turns up at George's with a bottle of whiskey, doesn't really seem shocked or empathetic about the death of Alison, tells Haskins he's out of order giving George a week's absence, and generally carries on like it's no biggie
Then again, for all Dennis Waterman's acting ability, I was never really convinced he'd just lost his wife in a tragic "accident" (and whilst posting George's pools coupon)
One thing you can pretty much guarantee, if a family member of the squad turns up in an episode it's not going to be good news (see also Stoppo Driver and Abduction)
