I remember first seeing Regan back in 1992 just after I turned 13. It was on a Saturday night when Channel 4 screened it as part of their TV Heaven season and Frank Muir introduced it, pointing out how young Dennis Waterman was back then. The opening fight scene was brutal and it was quite a sight seeing a much darker haired Morse nicking villains, wearing a car coat and carrying a pistol. I think I watched it up to the bit just after Regan has told Cowley's grandmother about his death. I didn't see Regan in full until in 2000.
I watched Regan again last year and it still holds up as a drama. Not a second is wasted and as it was John Thaw's first stab at the character, he comes across calmer, more relaxed but still tough. Not as boozy, raw and aggressive like he was in the series.

The one thing that i'm not keen on is that it is never really touched upon again why Carter left the squad, not approving of Regans methods, yet has no problems in the series. Unless IKM had planned to explore this further I suppose.

In some instances during series 1, there were differences in opinion between Regan and Carter in episodes like Queen's Pawn, Golden Boy and Cover Story where George had doubts about Sandy. But by series 2 after Mrs. Carter died, they became closer and the job was all that they had.
In Ian Kennedy Martin's Sweeney novels, Regan is pretty much a loner and Carter is his rival.

Nothing like Carter being prepared to leave the squad though. Although the disapproval of methods could be said to have been transferred to his wife. I'm not keen on the novels for that reason to be honest.

Had the IKM novels been made into feature length movies, I'm sure Carter would have been involved with Regan as usual. In my mind, I've always felt it would have been cool if they went to San Francisco to pick up a villain who had eluded them in London and they bumped into Lt. Mike Stone and Insp. Steve Keller. I wonder how they'd have got on. I reckon Stone and Regan would have had a grudging respect for each other as they were both hardened veterans whereas Carter and Keller would have had a rivalry between them with the former poking fun at the latter but eventually, they would have got on fine.

Wasn't there talk at some point of taking Regan and Carter to New York for a film or something?

I didn’t know that. Where do the films fit into the running order ? :) The first film, called "Sweeney!" was from 1976 (so around Series 3). The second, called "Sweeney 2" was filmed in late 1977 (during Series 4). You really need to get those two films too Alex as they are great. A bit harder edged than the episodes but good none the less. Gene. I will definitely get them Gene, they are on my radar (and in my Amazon basket) :) should I slot them in after series 3 and 4 respectively or are they watchable as stand alone films?

The second of the two films, I thought was quite a lot better than the first one.

You ought to get 'Regan' as well Alex and watch that before going too far with the series as it is the pilot episode originally shown in ITV's 1974 Armchair Cinema season. It will give you some background as to why George Carter became Jack Regan's sergeant: IMDB - Regan
You'll also love Regan's opening line. Sam.

As Sam mentioned, it's best to get "Regan" first so as to understand how Jack & George got together. Then I'd seriously consider watching the other two films as intended (during or after series 3 for Sweeney! & mid way between the series 4 episodes for Sweeney 2).
