It would be interesting to see the film to compare them. Lots of familiar names in the cast list and I notice the screenplay for this adaptation was by Nell Dunn, BFI link below. Up The Junction (1965)

I've seen the Ken Loach one too, on Youtube a couple of years back, not long after seeing the more well known later version. The KL one is black and white and much more documentary like in places, with the odd voice over and like a live interview with the odd character and even grittier with the odd bit of (nowadays) uncomfortable dialogue. There's a similar storyline through it but quite a few differences too so I found it interesting to compare the two.

I watched Ken Loach's version a few years ago, at the time I remember thinking that you couldn't have made a more damning portrait of the working class. From memory the characters were portrayed in very negative terms & had no redeeming features, I'd need to watch it again. Very different from Collinson's colourful & sentimental look at factory workers.
The same year as Up The Junction Loach made a film called 'The End Of Arthur's Marriage', this is a jaw droppingly odd musical comedy & is totally unlike anything Loach did before or since, it's on youtube but you have to pay £1.99 to watch it. I expect many will dodge it thinking, like I did, that it's a depressing kitchen sink play about a marriage break up, instead it's a bizarre piece of tv which defies description.

Not a Loach fan at all Arthur. Thanks for the heads up, so I know to avoid it

also bumped into this abominable version of the track inspired by the film Terrible version. I prefer Radio Active's parody (apologies for going a bit off-topic)

I agree with your assessement of the Loach UTJ TV play - very bleak
I generally find something worthwhile in Loach's work but not so much in this instance
The End Of Arthur's Marriage sounds well worth a watch for the curio value. You've made it sound very intriguing. Thanks as always
