I've ordered a Sony Bravia 43" 4k tv, £500. Estimated arrival is in a week. If money were no object I would've got an Oled tv, though I have read horror stories about screen burn & limited life span on Oled tv's so my disappointment at being too poor to buy one has been tempered a bit. Nice one, Arthur. When it arrives, I would be interested in how it copes with the sub-DVD quality material you mentioned earlier. Mrs Nightfly is hankering after a new set, though 43" is probably the limit we would go to. I watch a lot of Youtube quality type stuff in low resolution (old TV shows in 480p etc) on the current 32" and it's OK. For anyone with an interest in archiving and viewing a collection, I have an old Sumvision Cyclone player running into the TV with some favourite films on a HDD inside. It began to become a pain hooking it up to a PC to transfer things, so I now run a Plex server on the PC and use a Chromecast to send it to the TV. It's fairly easy to set up (and the basic version of Plex is free. I paid a couple of quid to get the mobile app so I can just do it all from the phone. There are alternatives, but I just went for Plex as it was the first one I came across). I believe some of the new Smart TVs do most of this for you.

The tv arrived today, had a brief look at a 4k disc I previously watched on my old tv, there's an obvious improvement to picture & sound as you'd expect. I tried a 480p clip downloaded from youtube, it looked worse than on my previous smaller tv. It would make sense if your living conditions allow it to have another smaller tv in a different room for watching low quality content. This is the problem with bigger screens, HD & 4k, it makes dvds & videotaped copies look worse still, but there it is.

I noticed the same intitally with the dvds on 1080 tv's.
