The episodes written by Troy Kennedy Martin tend to have questionable humour in them, the gun in the dishwasher- very silly. This gag was used again in the Sylvester Stallone film 'Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot', he plays a cop & his mother washes his gun. Two of the writers of this film were Brits, maybe they'd remembered this Sweeney episode.

In my opinion, easily the weakest episode of series 1. In fact it’s in my bottom five of all episodes overall, to me it was implausible and not a typical Sweeney episode.

I think it’s quite a good episode. The crime being committed is quite a good one. I was quite surprised when I saw the Bank Job and how similar the two are. I believed all that d-notice stuff about the Baker St job and wondered how this was so similar to a Night Out. I didn’t realise that it had been reported on normally.

I agree Cartman, it's not a great episode. In fact, as Arthur mentions in the above post, the Troy Kennedy Martin episodes are generally the poorer ones in the series.

I was about to ask which was generally the favourite from series 1 ... but I've just found the poll! Interesting that there is a clear winner ... I look forward to 'Abduction'. I am intentionally not reading comments until I've written my own, though. I don't know if that makes sense or is the opposite of what I should be doing! We were watching LOM with commentary earlier and Ashley Pharaoh and Philip Glenister kept talking about The Sweeney; at which point my other half looked at me and went "ahhh I see". hasn't taken long, has it?

I think that's the right way to do it. Watch the episode yourself before reading others comments so that you can form your own opinion first. You certainly won't be disappointed with Abduction though. It has all the elements and a super performance by John Thaw.
Gene.

Granted there is a bit of silliness like when Jack falls into the puddle and the dishwasher gag but I think the pub scenes are good especially when the gang comes out in the morning. Iris is a nice girl too You never know, the puddle, the gun in the dishwasher, Carter being beaten up by Special Branch, could easily have been real incidents when the real Flying Squad were out and about. A lot of these real life situations were worked into the episodes.

All a case of personal choice and opinions, Del. I mean, I like Visiting Fireman and Thin Ice, suspect not many Sweeney fans do!

I like them too They are not the best but you get the sense the series was finding its feet. Thin Ice is ropey and very silly.
