No sweat Athene. I would agree with you about shooting the movie there in the 60s, the place looks grim and as you say it radiates through the screen. In-fact the scars of wars (Cold and WWII) are visible today. Berlin is a great city to visit very unique. Caine does look effortlessly cool in these movies, specs and all. Looking through this thread again makes me want to watch Ipcress or Funeral in Berlin with a helping of xmas booze

Thanks Arthur - not see that before
I'm a huge Len Deighton fan
I'm currently working my way through the Bernard Samson books
if you've not read them then I recommend them very highly
There's nine novels and a prequel
I'm poised to start number four
All hail Bernard Samson, a truly believable intelligence offer (just like the nameless operative in the Len Deighton's "Harry Palmer" books).

I've only tried 2 Len Deighton novels, 'Only When I Larf' as I like the film that was made of it & 'Bomber' which was on a list of Anthony Burgess's top 100 novels of all time. I gave up on Bomber as I found it rather dull. The Motorhead song of the same name is taken from the book, Deighton was Lemmy's favourite author I think.

I remember watching 'Only When I Larf' one afternoon c.1985/86, I don't think it's ever been shown on terrestrial TV since then. Very catchy theme tune as I recall and a typical caper film from 1968. I don't think it's ever been released on dvd either. Villain

Thanks for the tip Lord. I will remember it and try one of the books sometime. By the way since you like reading, have ever tried one of Phillip Kerr's books in the Bernie Gunther series. The first three stories are in a collection called The 'Berlin Noir' Trilogy and I found them to be great reading. They are very popular.

I've seen all three of these Harry Palmer films. All very good and enjoyed them. They are normally on over crimbo somewhere. Another good forgotten Caine film is Blue Ice. Not Harry Palmer but good all the same.
