Based on the novel of the same name by Len Deighton , Funeral in Berlin is a British spy film starring Michael Caine. It is the second of three 1960s films following the fortunes of the lead character Harry Palmer. The Ipcress File 1965 Funeral in Berlin 1966 Billion Dollar Brain 1967 Caine would reprise the role of Harry Palmer in Bullet to Beijing (1995) and Midnight in Saint Petersburg (1996). Funeral In BerlinThis is a great film in the Harry Palmer spy series and it see's Harry given the job to help Colonel Stok the head of intelligence in the Soviet Union's Berlin section defect to the West. As he was once involved in dodgy dealings in West Berlin secret agent Harry Palmer is sent to West Berlin to find out if Stok's offer is genuine and arrange his escape. Without giving too much away for those yet to see the movie the film involves factions of the Israeli secret service and the Berlin underworld mixed up in a twisting plot that develops and uncovers other goings on besides the escape attempt including ex Nazi stolen Cash. IMO This movie follows on nicely from The Ipcress File and allows the character Harry Palmer to flourish. This film has a better story than the first with good sub plots going on revealed by Harry as he works the case. If you like Bond or other spy flicks you will definitely like this series of films. Now and Then Snaps
During a recent trip to Berlin I took the opportunity to photograph a couple of locations from the opening credits of the film. Opening credits 1966Now 2015
Hotel Zoo Now , taken from a facing angle I noted that the lower Canopy has gone Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the Europa Centre with huge revolving Mercedes Star

yes good idea Saint Start off with The Ipcress File and then watch this one. I think the trilogy is out on Blu-Ray which I will look into. I liken Harry Palmer to a more down to earth, believable spy character than Mr Bond, though there are similarities. It was probably conceived by Paramount studios as an attempt to cash in on the massive success the Bond movies enjoyed.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the break Del Boy. The first two Harry Palmer films are very good indeed in my opinion. I only watched Funeral In Berlin for the first time about six months ago myself, and I enjoyed it a lot. The Cold War atmosphere in Berlin is done really well, and you get to see a lot the sixties Berlin in the film. Hope you enjoyed the Berlin bier. By the way did you manage to visit the site of Hitler's's Bunker ?
