Good info lads, cheers. I also notice when i watch it that rather snazzy new on the scene Central TV Ident. Just as we discussed in the Retro Ident thread > Classic Idents I like how it turns into the ball on the roulette wheel & cuts to Dennis supping a brandy & looking slightly worse for wear.

I agree with the general consensus about the whole series here.
4 & 5 just absolute dreck. Awful facsimiles of once so well written and wonderful characters.
3 I found surprisingly more likeable on original viewing than I feared, but time has not been kind to it, and it has actually dropped in my opinion rating. It's a sinker basically, the opposite of a grower!
1 & 2 are how it should have been and should have stayed. 1 is consistently good throughout the entire series, but series 2 was excellent when they were in "Derbyshire" (Nottinghamshire in reality), but dropped a little when in Spain when there was more utilising of studio sets and therefore Wayne continually being absent chasing skirt or something.
But Spain had its moments of greatness. The whole hire car thing. Twin comedy aspects of Barry being clamped and Bomber almost bursting out of a Fiat (or Seat I suppose) 127! And a period piece in Oz's impossible yearning for a 5-seater Porsche, which of course is no longer impossible.
But presumably still out of the reach of 7 bare-a***ed brickies!

One of the major issues I have after series 2 is the absent Gary Holton. He was irreplaceable. Series 2, especially the Thornely Manor episodes are first class. Gene. I totally agree, the Thornley Manor / Arthur 'Tiger' Pringle episodes were the peak for me.
I watched all series right from the start and it was for me unmissable TV. Like all above say though, series 3 onwards were not up to the same standard. I still watched them and thought them okay, and of course a sterling performance from Annie Cartwright as Neville's secretary before she made the force, but the replacement of Gary Holton with his 'son' and then latterly the sad loss of Pat Roach meant the end of a good series.
Sam.

Fantastic series Del. Nothing to choose between series 1 & 2 but after that it was a slippery slope. Series 2 just edges it for me. Loads of discussion to be had for this series though. Gene. As you say Gene it is a close match between series 1 and 2. My favourite is the early part of series 2 when they are working at Thornely Manor. I agree with The Saint that series 3 was watchable (just), but series 4 was awful! It really should have been retired after series 2. Steed

I'm in agreement with the majority, series 1 & 2 unmissable, series 3 watchable with some great bits but missing Gary Holton.Series 4 not too good.I think series 1 just edges it for me,but I am open to series 2 being better-just depends on which series I watched last!!Both brilliant.
As an aside to this,I thought I'd let anybody who's interested (and I know some will be,due to Sweeney meets/location visits etc)know, but the series 2 location where Moxey purchases his new identity, the Transport Café,here in Wilford,Nottingham, was recently demolished, sadly.Mertrux has bought the site and flattened it all.Ah,bollo**s.

I remember the original episodes being show from S1 and 2 although was a bit young to appreciate them then, although my parents watched them. I bought the DVD set of 1 and 2 and quite enjoyed it and have enjoyed the continuity aspect as well as separate self contained stories amongst the wider background.
One or two things, like the German building site filmed in Elstree with German bricks specially imported for the props are quite interesting. Someone on the internet movie car database site noted an Austin Allegro estate in the far distance and mentioned it was unlikely that they were sold in Germany....
Also Michael Elphick's hard drinking hard case bully character (who gets his comeuppance), seems to have a confusing accent which varies between Irish or Scouse!
It brung a smile to my face with all the characters gradually meeting up again in episode 1 S2, with Moxey right near the end, who's revealed to have been kipping somewhere secret (was it Barry's loft?? Can't remember now), completing the line up.
Good series, and although the Spain filmed parts lost "something" there, it was still quite interesting to see 1985 Spain in the location scenes. Not sure that the series has really dated that much either as a modern series could easily be written about a group of multi-regional Brit builders etc, with only the lack of internet, mobile phones, and the odd visible 80's hairstyle and the cars reminding us that it was the 80's.

I love Auf Pet, I think series 2 is the best, they seem to have got into their stride by series 2. Series 3 was watchable (just!), but series 4 was awful, I think I only saw a couple of series 4 episodes. They should have followed Fawlty Towers example and finished for good after the second series and quit while they were at the top. Some things should never be revisited, you just can't capture the magic of the original two series, it was of it's time and should have been left in the 80s. The Saint Well put Saint, series 1-2 are the best and as for the rest it's only really series 3 that's 'passable' the rest... donkey shite. The one I saw most at the time was series 2 and do love the Thornley Manor episodes. But I've got into Series 1 quite a lot over the last few years and would have to say it's my fave series out of them all. Big shame the BBC revived this and do know that one of the original producers Allan McKeown wasn't to happy with Clement and La Frenais for bringing AWP back. Currently watching the Likely Lads/WHTTLL at the moment and can see a lot of links with AWP in them especially some aspects of Oz, Dennis and Neville in Bob and Terry too. Hope you enjoy the lads shenanigans in Dusseldorf, Derbyshire and Spain too Del Boy you're in for a treat mate.

There is one similarity in particular that springs to mind and that is the monologue that Bob gives when he thinks that Thelma has left him after the fishing trip. In AWP, Barry gives a similar speech to Hazel (though she's not in the room at the time) and they are very similar in that neither of the intended recipients hear it and neither orator actually tells them when they have the chance. The camera angles are very similar too. I often wonder if they knew that they had used a similar piece of writing before.

True Steve, I've noticed the Kismet line that Barry mentions in S1 about Oz's dream and Christa, turning up in the Likely Lads and there's a fair few other things that got recycled in AWP. Also in Villain which Clement and La Frenais were involved in Richard Burton mentions the 'Don't be a berk all your life take a night off line' which Dennis used to Oz just changing berk to pr*ck too. Still it's all good if it's well written and well acted!
