The Witches hat Loved that, although I remember it being scary as a young rider when the older kid's were pushing it round and climbing up it at the same time. I remember thinking how crazy they were. In London this type of playground ride seemed to disappear by the mid 80's, as the equipment wore out and H+S concerns crept in. Although they still make this fella :

The tall slide......I remember them well. Here in Clifton,Nottingham, where I have spent my entire life, there were many parks like the one Sam has posted up.Clifton was the biggest council estate in Europe up until a few years ago.The park close to the house where I grew up had a tall slide;you climbed the steps up into a wooden enclosure, before sliding down as fast as humanly possible, forwards, backwards,on your front,on your back etc.The park had a big grassy area too,so we could have a game of football as well as enjoying the swings, slide, roundabout.Aaaah, lost laughter in the breeze.

Until I was about 10 our playground was the wood behind our house. We moved house then & the house had a small green opposite it which had a 4 swings; that was it! We did have a lot of good times playing football & rounders on the green though. I think it has a few more amusements on it now but I'm now to big to fit on the swing!!

The playground down the road from me has four swings on it plus a slide / climbing frame combined, and a couple of those little horse things on what look like Scammell suspension coil springs. All the play area is a rubber mat and there are a couple of bench seats too.
The benches though are often used by older lads of an evening for a get-together over a few cans of beer and some ciggies but at least they're decent enough to use the bin provided rather than the ground for their empties.
Sam.

I've only just read this thread now. What a great thread ! I remember a long high metal slide in my local playground when I was little. You used to burn your legs on it on hot days. Fortunately that playground seemed to miss the council playground revamps for many years and I got to take my son there when he was little to play on the same slide and swings (with those heavy rusty chains) like I had done. He didn't care less but it made me happy. Similar to this slide Where I moved to as an adult had a playground with a very wide metal slide where four kids could slide down next to each other. That was good, could even take adults. I have a slide up the back corner of the yard. It was 'rescued' when the council were replacing old equipment. I think it was from the 1980s, a solid orange wonder which circles down from a platform like a staircase. It is good fun. Kids who are visiting love it but I encourage the parents to try it too. You can't help but smile when you go down a slide. The playground slides finally caught the eye of local councils so now the playgrounds resemble all others with their brightly coloured climbing frames and other 'safe' equipment. One skinny high slide still survives at a farm playground near me, and as it is positioned at the top to the bottom of a hill, it survives for young daredevils and to the delight of their parents who remember. This makes me think of a thread about where did you play as a child that wasn't a playground. It is sort of 70s and 80s though.

No doubt some daredevil kid would attempt to sit on a skateboard down that slide back in the day.

This unusual slide next to a block of flats somewhere in London was featured in an episode of 'Angels' from 1975.
