A great voice is a real gift. I always like Tim Piggot-Smith on those Battlefield documentaries, he's much better than whoever the bland person is who replaced him. Also Larry Olivier was excellent on The World at War. Yes. Laurence Olivier was great on World at War.
I love listening to Patrick Allen - though his voice tends to conjour up images of Protect & Survive, and Nuclear Armageddon accompanied by Air-Raid sirens and instructions to build your own Nuclear Bunker.
Who was it who did the Pathe News Reels - was it Bob Danvers-Walker (off the original Take Your Pick?)
PA is another distinctive one. Think you're right about BDW.

I remember a few of those ads Sparky.
Not 100% certain but I think bits and pieces of the Henry Cooper/Woolworths one features in the BBC Four documentary Christmas '77 with the Sex Pistols that was last on 2-3 years back. Sadly it's not on iPlayer.
Great stuff with these Sparky keep them coming! So, that ad could be 1977 - not 1978? Possible Sparks, but reckon Julien Temple just used ad's from around that time to pep up the documentary... probably not year specific. It might be on YouTube I think it comes on within the first 5 minutes or so IIRC.

I can remember past and recent adverts who's voices I can recognize; Richard Briers could be heard on a few, as well as appearing in 1985 Ford Sierra adverts, have also heard what sounded like Ian Mcshane in one and I'm pretty sure Martin Shaw used to voice the Comparethemarket.com adverts before being replaced by the Meercats!
Patrick Allen voiced the UK Ford car ads for many years from circa 1977 well into the late 80s at least.

A more classic Sierra ad also from '85 was this one (I think) V/O'd by Martin Jarvis, it made touring car driver Andy Rouse a household name back then.

Love the coal board ad! I suppose they thought they were only being practical, I mean what woman would have wanted to go down the mines, they were thinking. As you say, times change!

Thing is; I've seen quite a few adverts from the 70s - advertising jobs - Coal Board, Electricity Board, Gas Board, British Steel - and they, apart from subject matter, are all the same. Just shows how attitudes have changed - for the better too.
Also - it shows how self sufficient this country once was - with it's own national industries. These days we have to rely on everyone else - and it's all run by corporate conglomerates.
