In the mid to late 70s Radio 1 used to play to compile a top 100 singles chart and play it around Christmas and bank holidays. Used to enjoy that as you got a real good mix and it was round the time I started to listen to pop/rock so heard a lot of stuff for the first time.
Radio is dire now, Radio 2 is not dissimilar to what Radio 1 used to be. Without the sexual predators.

I bet that was a good listen back in the day. Capital used to do a similar thing during the 80s although theirs would be a top 500 singles.

I used to love tuning in to the Charts on Radio 1 on a Sunday. When I first started listening, it was Tommy Vance presenting - I think he did a Friday Rock Show too.
I used to rig up a cassette recorder to the earphone output on the Radio and sit poised with the tape on Record & Pause to record my fave tracks and hope they couldn't cut the end off or talk over the bugger! The Top 100 was great - as I used to fill in the blanks on the tapes!
I tuned to Radio 2 about 20odd years ago as it was a breath of fresh air from the crap and babble Radio 1 were playing. At the time, Radio 1 were trying to re-brand and distance themselves from the "staunchy" BBC.
And there was this huge crossover of music from Ibiza / Club Scene - which made me think I had heard better sounding Fire Alarm systems!
At the time Radio 2 was great - great DJs (the nasty ones by this time were either Dead, skipped abroad, locked up or under investigation) and they did some great Feature / Documentries - the ELO and Pink Floyd ones being two.
Then you get the crawl of the hired Hair Do wannabe DJs creeping in - Vanessa Feltz, Rhylan Clarke (the one who looks like a Horse), Graham Norton etc - and for me, it all got spoiled.
I don't mind listening to Zoe Ball, Ken Bruce, Steve Wright (that's turned into 3 hours of backslapping), Jeremy Vine show gets irritating. And I used to love the Drivetime show with Simon Mayo - even that's gone now!

Yes, I like Mayo, forcing him to have female co-star ended that. Wogan on the early show could be very funny, then they brought in the ginger freak Evans.
Was it Bannister who cleared out the old DJs on R1? DLT famously walked before he was pushed and got to announce it on air I think.

I worked on a Documentary with his Brother many years after the Radio 1 tale - and didn't put together that they were brothers until well after. (Looking alike and the same surname never roused suspicions)
I remember DLT resigning on air - he jumped before he was pushed, Simon Bates did exactly the same shortly after.
DLT last popped up on Magic FM on a Saturday morning - and then (obviously) vanished after his Arrest. It was quite like listening to his old R1 Sunday show at times - though he had grown older and turned into a Grumpy old sod (don't we all) - and at times he'd go off into a full on rant about something he'd read in the paper. (Like you believe the press)
Simon Bates was doing voice over work on "Now 80" Music Channel.
Have a look at this..... And I thought the singers were British.

He always completes the circuit in the end though Good clips Sparky A lot of singers and DJs take on an American style delivery without even knowing it. This is why these jingles would go undetected. Strange decision to make them elsewhere considering the beeb had all the studio's equipment etc.

Though the company specialised in On Air promotion for Radio Stations - I think they are still going. So I'd think it would be cheaper to to just come up with a format and let a promotions company do all the dirty work. The R1 jingles of the time had a very distinctive feel about them.

Interesting that they didn't mention Ireland in the early part of clip one, just England, Scotland and Wales, but then added it in later with the other three!
