A great nostalgic film of the 70s remember watching it as a kid at the cinema.. probably had a bit of a profound effect on me at the time, kind of emphasises the importance of family life! I remember buying it for my daughter couple of year back but it didn’t have no way near the same effect! Lol.. A lot of The youth of today are so desensitised to things due to the constant toxic affect of mobile phone social media! they were so many great tv programs around in the 70s beit comedy or tv drama, and I feel we will never see the likes of this again!
anybody else remember this poignant film growing up!

Remember it very well, and I've recorded it as it's been on today, went to see it at the cinema in 1970 when it came out. It was filmed at the Keighley and Worth Valley railway which had only just got started at the time as it was the early days of railway preservation. I like the contrast in it between the nice, middle class London family and the grittiness of Yorkshire where they have had to relocate to.

Just watching this now!
I remember the first time I saw this film. Our school, along with another two schools used to hire a Cinema at Christmas - so you'd have a 800seat cinema with 3 or 4 different schools in (always a recipe for disaster - esp for those sat under the balcony...)
One of the first visits with school was to see the "Railway Children" - a great film. It was shot at good time - during the summer - so the countryside colors are really warm & vibrant.
It was shot at Keighley around 1969/70. I have been up to Keighley a few times -and it still really hasn't changed.
But saying that.....
I was last up there working on the "Great Train Robbery" a few years back - it was p*****g it down, middle of winter, freezing cold and a Million Miles away from the summer scenes in "Railway Children".
Though I managed to take a ton of photos, have a ride in the cab and go at driving a Diesel Class 40.... ..... heck!

It was funny how Sally Thomsett and Jenny Agutter played children when they were actually young adults at the time. Their contract apparently didn't allow them to be seen smoking or drinking or reveal their true age during the shooting of the film.

I remember seeing this around the time of its release but must admit that for the 8 year old Tyler it didn't hold my attention.
Wind forward 25 years and it took on a whole new meaning when Annie bought it on DVD for our twins. It was a favourite for them to sit and watch so Annie and I got to view it a good number of times too.
Certainly is a good film with great performances from the likes of Bernard Cribbins and Dinah Sheridan as well as from the 'children' themselves. If I remember rightly Sally Thomsett who played the 'younger' sister was actually a couple of years older than Jenny Agutter.
We also bought the 2000 version of the film for our youngest that had Jenny Agutter again, this time in Dinah Sheridan's role as the mother. It was quite a good interpretation again but didn't have quite the same nostalgia element of the original.

I've been there myself a few times, I have sister who lives in Silsden, a nearby village. Was that the drama about the robbery made just a couple of years back?

Oh I love this! I saw both versions are about the same time. Probably when the latter was brand new. At the time I always preferred the new one; I suspect that that’s because Bobbie was played by Jemima Rooper who was George in The Famous Five and I was born a fan-girl . But I love both adaptations. Mum recorded both onto VHS for me at that time and I decorated the covers with cuttings from the TV magazine. Simpler times. The bit where Jenny Agutter cries “Daddy, my daddy!” Still makes my mum cry which I didn’t used to understand but I guess I do now.

A great film and cast. I visited the station location a few years ago and took a few photos. I'll try and dig them out when I get home. Sally Thomsett is a lovely lady. I'm in touch with her frequently and she sent a good wishes message to my daughter's school this Christmas. Shes also promised to join us on a meet one day...
This is a timely thread as it happens, as Bernard Cribbins was 91 on 29th December.
