In the World in Action episode above, it seemed that the Countryman investigation was constantly blocked by those in the higher ranks of the Police. Makes you wonder what else they were frightened of coming out.
That bit is appalling. Much the same in other organisations, the senior staff more interested in what it means to them than stopping corruption, bad behaviour etc. ITV broadcast a programme in the YTV area, a few years back about the Rotherham Child Grooming scandal. After it's broadcast, I was seething - as again - staff on the front line knew what was going on and tried to prevent it. The higher rankings of the Council told them to keep their mouths shut - or else.
A whistle blower at the Council was sacked, smeared in the press and then threatened with "breaking the official secrets act" if she didn't back down. She lost her home, was threatened with having her kids taken away (ironically by Social Services).
The head of Childrens Services & Social Services (who was fully aware of what was going on and turned a blind eye) - took an early retirement - and given a £50,000 golden handshake....
And people wonder why I have no time for local councils....
This Prince Andrew business - no smoke without fire.
But sod all will happen. Had it been anyone else - they'd have been nicked.
If the US want him for questioning, they should return the woman who ran over and killed that young lad - and then buggered off claiming Diplomatic Immunity....

They never liked returning IRA terrorists, until some people ran a couple of planes into tower blocks then they were interested in getting terrorists.

They never liked returning IRA terrorists, until some people ran a couple of planes into tower blocks then they were interested in getting terrorists. I am no way condoning what the IRA did - though they seemed a different breed of Terrorist - you knew who and what you were dealing with. They were pretty up front with their cause. And still are.
The recent breed of Terrorist seem to jump on whatever bandwagon they choose - their excuses for their actions change.
On my first day at work in 1990, I was about 500yards away from an IRA bomb that exploded on the roof of an Army Careers Centre. I was told it was 6lb of Semtex, only 3lb of it actually exploded. Had the full amount of it gone off, police told me I would have been blown to pieces. Or seriously injured by the flying glass and metal bolts they put in the device as shrapnel.
I still have the receipt from the cash point that was next door to the Army place. The time on the receipt is 4min and 35seconds before the blast. They missed their target that time, and returned with a sniper and shot who they were after 6 months later.
A couple were finally caught in Bradford about 4 years ago - convicted, served about 2 years in Prison and released to get on with their lives - thanks to the Good Friday Agreement....
As a result, I am nervy if I see unattended bags and such left in public places. I hate using bins in shopping centres/stations etc - I'd rather cart my rubbish around in a bag and take it home.
Back on the Police Corruption thing...
Many older officers claim that they needed to have the Grasses and the close links with the underworld to get the results and find out what was going on. Frank Williams - a 1960s Flying Squad DI was on the Train Robbery Team - his Superiors and officers under him couldn't under stand where he was getting his information. On a "hunch" he found about £35,000 of the cash in a sack in a Phone Box in South London. Just by Accident...
Williams even claimed that he had to do deals with other known criminals to produce results. Even Nipper Read had to do deals to get people to testify against the Krays.

Didn't 1/2 make a funny smell after it went off (not me, the bomb) - luckily no one was injured. It went off just before everything had opened up properly. Worryingly, there was a large shopping centre attached to the area - so security was mega high for years.
Back to Topic - Does anyone know how long Drury went down for? Humphries was around for years - I thought he died recently.
