Another couple of pretty poor episodes on Friday night with a few moments of vague intrigue...
I have no recollection of Hithouse who seemed to be some kind of early Acid House Euro outfit who we see on a very low budget and completely bizarre video....
Jack To The Sound Of The Underground
Perhaps our resident raver Dirty Epic remembers this like it was yesterday
Got to say even if I'd been necking Es like they were going out of fashion this would still have sounded unredeemingly rubbish
Royal House, it ain't
I'd also forgotten just how bad All About Eve were. I thought they might be some vaguely credible Goth group. Truly grim. And don't get me started on the rubbish Nathan Jones cover by Bananrama, not amount of choreography is going to cover up its awfulness
In fact, across the 17/11/88 and 24/11/88 episodes I liked was the short clip we got of Pet Shop Boys Left To My Own Devices...
And, I suppose, Bomb The Bass were okay with their cover of I Say a Little Prayer...

Finally caught up with the backlog of Top of the Pops 1988 episodes.
Pet Shop Boys "Domino Dancing" was OK.
Was the re-release of the Hollies "He aint heavy" to do with the drink ad on TV of the time? (In the days you could advertise drink on TV).

Hithouse? I'm sure there's a typo error there. Isn't it missing the first 'S'? I had forgotten this one and can see why. Now I've got to try and forget it all over again! Sam.

The Dutchman behind Hithouse was called Peter Slaghuis, his surname translated in English means 'hithouse', apparently slag is Dutch for a hit.

Slaghouse would have been a better name than Hithouse, though the BBC might have taken a dim view

Your aura's been shattered Arthur - I thought this was just stuff you were pulling from what I assumed to be your vast and imposing memory

The commercial rings a bell Sparky but I think it was more to do with 'He Ain't Heavy' being covered by Bill Medley for Rambo3 around that time which sparked the re-release idea... Medley's cover wasn't that good IMHO and will spare you it here.

Regarding that Hithouse song, it was the brainchild of Dutch producer Peter Slaghuis and pretty much (badly) samples the crop of mainly Chicago house tracks that were around before in a sort of medley style. It's sort of one of those which (perhaps never) sounded better at the time and probably got sucked into the Top 40 when the 'Acid Ted' thing hit the tabloids... although IMHO there were a good 15-20 way, way better records released in 88-89 which just missed out on the magical 40 position that were better than this. The remix of it might be the reason for it charting?
'Jack to the Sound's' claim to fame is it was used as the opening for The Mary Whitehouse Experience. Sadly producer Peter Slaghuis died in a car smash in 1991, I thought trance act Meng Syndicate were something to do with Slaghuis but apparently not.
Yeah file under one of those under it being better at the time, it's enjoyable crap IMO but it's no Royal House either let alone the stuff that would emerge in the 90's as you say LE.

Sparky is correct about the drink ad, it was for Miller Lite and I recall at the time that the track was re-released as a result of the ad:
Not a bad ad but a great tune in my opinion.
Sam.
