I was staying in Bristol last weekend before travelling to Cardiff for the British Speedway GP, so could have gone to look at these locations myself. Thanks for sharing them Peter Vi Apologies for going off topic but I see you're another Speedway fan Vi, I used to go and watch Berwick Bandits every weekend when I loved there Interesting to know you're a fan too Steve I also managed to see Wolves at Swindon and the Premier League Pairs at Highbridge, Somerset, whilst I was down there, so made for quite a long weekend Vi

I remember watching shoestring, Vienna.. They seemed to be quite a lot of cop/ detective dramas in the 70s and 80s, and then it seemed to drop off!

Great pictures PP, thanks for posting these. Perhaps there's the possibility of a future 4:3TV meet in Bristol, a combined Shoestring and The Young Ones. Lunch at The Kebab And Calculator anyone? Sam

Passing through South Gloucestershire earlier today, I took the opportunity to go and visit the Swan Inn in Tockington Green, a location used in the second episode of the first series from 1979. The village pub from the episode 'Knock for Knock'... THEN NOW Eddie Shoestring speaks to the pub landlord and enquires about a 'hit and run' by a white van THEN NOW Vi

A very good episode that one. From memory his Hillman Hunter got pushed off a pier and he got his mark 3 Cortina estate, which he billed Radio West for, much to the annoyance of Don Satchley!

Yes Cartman, one of the best episodes... I even managed to see a bit of the filming in Upper Street, Bristol Vi

I've now moved on to working my way through a few Shoestring episodes and the latest one I watched today was The Link Up, from series 1,which is another of my favourite episodes. It was about a guy who was supposedly phoning through updates while on a single handed round the world voyage in a small boat. In reality, he had parked his boat up and was hiding in a barn.
This was based on a real event, as Donald Crowhurst actually did this in a round the world yacht race in 1968.He was a boat builder whose business was going down the pan and was aiming at winning the cash prize, but he fell badly behind in the race so hid off the coast of West Africa, and waited a few months until the rest of the competitors were on the way back, intending to rejoin the race then. I can't remember the full details of it, but his boat was later found drifting, and he was never seen again. As in the programme, he had been sending in false reports of his position.
Two other excellent episodes I have watched this week were The Partnership and Stamp Duty. A very good series in my opinion

An interesting piece of information about the episode, Cartman. The Link-Up is one of my favourites and Janet Key is in it too. You may be interested to know that filming on The Partnership episode was getting under way 40 years ago today: 17th May - 1st June 1979. Vi

Janet Key was quite nice, agree Vi! I liked the supporting cast in the series too, Liz Crowther, Doran Godwen and Micheal Medwin who I thought was very good as Don Satchley, Eddie's boss. A bit like Garfield Morgan did with Haskins in The Sweeney, it could have been a bit of a thankless role, but he made Don a rounded and interesting character.
On Donald Crowhurst, there is a very good documentary about the story called Deep Water, its on You tube and worth watching .

Ive got up to series 2 now and watched a couple of episodes this week, Now where was I? which was about a guy who was camping on the moors and witnesses a jail break, but bangs his head and gets amnesia, which I enjoyed and thought was very good. More good outdoor location filming, some on the West Somerset Railway. The second was Looking for Mr Wright, which was a man on a blind date who disappears, Diana Dors was in this and was good, as she always was, but I didnt think it was one of the better ones, I thought the plot was a bit implausible.
Overall, i think series 1 was marginally better than series 2, but an excellent programme nonetheless.
