The best hood ornament I remember seeing was the flying A which used to be on the bonnet of Austin's in the 50s. You pulled it back to open the bonnet.

Bonnet mascots we call 'em Whenever I see these I always think of a tv programme I saw years ago that explained how the spirit of ecstasy retracts should anyone try to remove it. Also wonder about the safety of them, that Alvis one looks lethal.

Sort of related to this you still get a few of the retro-style AA and RAC badges on some cars these days... wonder if you can still get these or if these are old one's that have passed from car to car?
Did the NRMA in Aus ever have similar badges too Batgirl?
Got to admit they don't really work on modern cars and/or it seems to be dying out these days and I know when I was a member of AA/RAC/Green Flag etc. Bonnet mascots we call 'em Whenever I see these I always think of a tv programme I saw years ago that explained how the spirit of ecstasy retracts should anyone try to remove it. Also wonder about the safety of them, that Alvis one looks lethal. I think the modern RR and Merc badges are tested for pedestrian safety Art they're certainly better than the older style one's which you say like the Alvis one do (were) quite lethal as you say.
Sadly I think Jaguar couldn't redo their one for the newer regulations hence it's shift to the grille on the post 90's models.

Also wonder about the safety of them, that Alvis one looks lethal. It's illegal to fit radiator grille/bonnet mascots in the UK unless they comply with strict safety laws. This is why since 1980 Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy mascots have retracted into the radiator shell if struck. The Saint

I remember seeing an episode of 'Dickinson's Real Deal' some years ago, someone had an antique mascot to sell, I think it was French, it was of a figure like an angel or torchbearer & it had a light inside it. I think it sold for quite abit.

Google the one for the Spanish pre war car make Hispano Suiza - and that's quite a smart but nowadays quite lethal mascot - a distinctive pointed Stork bird in flight.
Also the old American make, Pierce-Arrow had another distinctive one which was a person firing an arrow from a bow.

Don't those Yank big rigs from Kensworth and Peterbuilt have some sharp looking hood ornaments on their hood's? Not sure they'd pass UK/EU regulations mind. Prefer a Scania any day.

Thanks for sharing. Cheers Dirty Epic. It is a 1924 Minerva AB tourer. It was a first for me.
