1980s video nasties are, in my opinion, room 101 fodder, horror films aren't really my bag, apart from the Gothic Hammer ones, and silent era weird stuff.
Just remembered a couple more programmes I used to watch when I was young, The man from Uncle and The Lovers, with Beryl and Geoffrey bobbles bon bon (Paula Wilcox and Richard Beckinsale)
On to adult ish stuff, I remember being 16,would have been about April 76, and reading a review in the TV Times about an up coming play called Huggy Bear (no connection with the starsky and hutch character) which was, according to the blurb, a bit naughty, about a dentist and his dental nurse. I think Denholm Elliott was in it with Sharon Maughan, later of the coffee adverts. I decided that this needed to be checked out so I sneaked downstairs at about half eleven to watch it.
It was very tame, nothing more than you would get on the Benny Hill show really!

The world changed when Connery pressed that little red button.

I watched some Minder when I was aged 3-5 years old. Even caught some bits of The Sweeney when I was 5/6 years old. Remember watching a bit of In From The Cold and the climax of Victims in which for the very first time in my life, I saw John Thaw and Dennis Waterman carry guns. Also used to watch Prisoner Cell Block H which my brother taped as well as some episodes of Blackadder, The Young Ones (when repeated in 1989), Alas Smith & Jones and Whose Line Is It Anyway? I also watched Alexei Sayle's Stuff which used to give me belly laughs, A Bit Of Fry & Laurie, Bottom, some episodes of The Equalizer, a few eps of Morse and remember watching the first 20 or so minutes of Sweeney pilot Regan in 1992 when I was 13.
I also remember watching bits of The Mary Whitehouse Experience in 1992 and watched EastEnders from the start until my mum told me not to watch any more of it as it dealt with adult situations.

Had a search for 'Huggy Bear', there's some stills of it on shutterstock.com. Maurice Denham rather than Denholm Elliott was in it. Also starring the Thornley Manor ghost Paddy Joyce.

On the subject of Video Nasties...
Does anyone remember "Creepshow" - an early George Romero film? It was made in 1982 - but am unsure if it even made the cinema, but went "straight to video". I think it was one of the first Horror type films I had seen as a kid.
It was made up of 3 or 4 different stories, in comic book fashion - and each story would have a big name in the lead role. In one story was Ted Danson, and another was Leslie Neilson - I can't recall who else was in it.
But Neilson - played a villian - and suprisingly quite sinister too. A far cry from Frank Drebbin!

I used to have Creepshow on pre certificate VHS, also had the comic book version of it. Stephen King's son played the little boy in the linking story ( King himself stars in one of the stories ). I was a big fan of George Romero in my teens, rented Dawn Of The Dead countless times from the video shop. In fact his film 'Martin' was shown in about 1985/6 on Channel 4, first time I'd seen it & definitely the goriest film I'd seen on tv.
Speaking of horror films, Channel 4 had a season of Universal films ( Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, etc. ) in the 80's. I think they even had triple bills of films ( unthinkable today ) with the original trailers acting as continuity. Seeing those films as a teen had a big effect. The BBC & ITV also used to have regular horror film seasons, the film seasons on ITV could last as long as 6 months. ITV would also have seasons of French films ( dubbed in English rather than subtitled ) under the banner 'Le Continental', most of these films were crime thrillers starring Alain Delon.

Funny you should mention Steadicam Sparky as 'Made In Britain' that Dirty listed famously used it. Not sure if I saw Made In Britain first time around, I think it was probably repeated on Channel 4.
The Ian McKellen film drama 'Walter', about an adult with learning difficulties first shown on Channel 4's opening night, had quite a disturbing effect on me, the scenes in the mental hospital in particular.
The first time I saw female nudity on tv was probably in one of the Hammer vampire films, 'Lust For A Vampire', 'Twins Of Evil', etc. First full frontal may have been in 'The Blood On Satan's Claw'.
There are other systems available. "Steadycam" was the first commercial, and readily available for hire to anyone setup. In the early versions, the operator wore a harness holding the camera in 0 gravity - the operator could only spend a certain amount of time in this setup, as it could damage his/her back. It's be like wearing a tight corset, with handful of house bricks strapped to the front! You can buy cheaper versions for home use which are quite effective. It was also very expensive to hire.
I loved the Hammer Films; and also have a soft spot for the old US "B" Movies.
I saw a guy with a type of mini handheld steadcam for his iphone in Hyde park recently. I like those old horror films and US scifi from the 50s and 60s.

A lot of the so-called video nasties from the 1980s are available to watch on Arrow Video. I have seen quite a few of them. Many are just laughable and are pretty tame viewing for today's horror audiences. However, one or two are quite unpleasant to watch such as Mark of the Devil from 1969; a sort of nasty European version of Witchfinder General.Never really been that fussed with Video Nasty/Horror/Slasher films always preferred more grittier real life drama, Sci fi or crime scene capers than that stuff.
