I was only just turned 9 when decimalization came in and can also still convert between shillings and pence to pence. I recall at the time there were TV programs broadcast telling people what the conversion rates were and had accompanying, and very annoying, jingles that were recited over and over. They're probably on Youtube (which I can't access from the office) but one of the jingles was:
"One pound is a hundred new pennies, a hundred new pence to the pound, One pound is a hundred new pennies, a hundred new pence to the pound!"
They probably paid some lyricist a huge wad of Wonga to come up with that one.
It was strange that people also rebelled against it to the point that there was a jeweller's shop in Staines near where I lived, that continued to display their prices in the shop in pounds, shillings and pence right into the 80s.
Also with the quantity of coins that remained in circulation meant that buying something for 18p for example could mean paying with a two bob bit, a 5p piece, a tanner, and a half pence piece.
Sam.

I remember the Shilling (5p and 10p) sized coins were still in circulation until 1990-92 when they changed the 5 and 10p coins over. Beyond that don't know anything about what the money was valued as pre-decimalization although have heard tales it was worth more than what it was afterwards.

I was age 9 in 1971 and can still remember old money and can still convert from one to the other
All the school kids were given one of these in the run up... Note the half pence For years afterwards old relatives would moan about how confusing it was and how the shopkeepers had sneakily put their prices up after decimalisation I had one of those!

So did I but I ended up using the coins - Black Jacks and Fruit Salad were far more satisfying than a few coins sat in a bedroom drawer!

Or possibly Elsie ........... No mate, the six penny piece was never called an Elsie, I think you're getting confused with a 250 or 350 Yamaha (very few on here will get that one without turning to Google!) Sam. Not a biker young Tyler so I'll have to bow to your knowledge here!

Also heard, usually used by Stan, in 'On The Buses' are 'dollar' ( or 'half a dollar' ) & 'bar' ( or 'half a bar' )

In the White Paper Bags.
I used to fill them with Coke Bottles, Flying Saucers, those red Jelly Bootlace things, white chocolate mice, refreshers and some random Aniseed flavoured sweets that used to give me a headache....
Little wonder the Dentist waiting room was always busy.....

I don't think penny sweets have been a thing for quite a while now. I remember getting them very occasionally from a little shop near my primary school but they definitely don't have them now. I did see some in Cornwall last summer but they were all at least 10p.
