Did anyone else watch these funny rude films but classic 70s soft porn films?
I loved them all but my favourites were Confessions Of A Driving Instructor & Confessions From A Holiday Camp.

A sort of ruder version of Carry on films really, I've only seen the Holiday camp one. I remember when the first one came out, Window cleaner I think it was, in 74, I was 14, and this lad in our class at school managed to sneak in to the local cinema to see it, he must have been able to pass for 18! We quizzed him quite a bit about what was in it!

Confessions Of A Pop Performer is my favourite. I think the first time I came across them was in a video catalogue I picked up from the local tv rentals shop that also hired out video tapes, at that age I assumed they were sex films. I don't think they were shown on tv until the 90s. They're not very good but a damn sight better than the rip offs Adventures Of A Taxi Driver/Plumbers Mate & Private Eye & some of the other sex comedies of the time.

They were probably aimed at both the comedy and sex film markets but weren't very funny, or erotic either so missed both aims. One curious feature of these crappy sex comedies was the fact that quite a few well known actors and actresses appeared in them, due to the lack of film work in the British film industry at the time. Lynda Bellingham was in at least one of the confessions films and Blakey from On the Buses was in one of the rip off ones, Adventures of a plumbers mate, together with Elaine Paige.
Another notable example was Caligula which was intended to be a serious drama about the mad Roman emperor, but the funding dried up and Hugh Hefner got involved who turned it into a porno. John Gielgud, amongst others was in it.

Maybe Windsor Davies was in one of them as well? Yep. Confessions of a Driving Instructor. Which is a real headache as I’m trying to train my son at the moment.

I think Liz Fraser and Jill Gascoine also appeared in the "Confessions Of" or "Adventures Of" films too.
As regards Caligula that also starred Helen Mirren, Malcolm McDowell, and Peter O'Toole.
Sam.

On caligula again, I think it was Paul Raymond rather than Hugh Hefner who took it over. He brought in a lot of Mayfair and Penthouse models to appear in it.
I suspect that the Confessions films were reasonably successful at the time simply because the market for, should we say, rude stuff was much less well served then than it is now. Only three channels, no internet or videos. What competition was there? The Benny Hill show and the underwear pages of the Freeman's catalogue.
