Morecambe and Wise hoped Edward Woodward would come on their show, but Edward Woodward wouldn't. I thought it was funny ...................

Always an underrated show by all accounts, sadly doesn't get the exposure it deserves on TV. The Callan movie from '74 would be one of my favourites, which in itself was a rewrite of the episode 'Magnum for Scheider'.

That’s right Regal, the original first episode with same title exists for comparison.
A good characterisation with believable plots.
Unlike Space 1999 which follows it at 10pm on Forces TV with quite good characterisation and bizarre plots, although fun to watch.

Nothing does bizarre plots like The Avengers, but still highly enjoyable! When the Callan film 'Wet Job' came out in early 80's there was possible talk of a couple of new series of it. Then Edward went to New York for The Equalizer, Bringing the idea that McCall could possibly be Callan after leaving the service. The rumour was shot down pretty quick, but it still lingered for quite some time.

Channel 4 repeated the final colour series from 1972 around 1986/87, unfortunately quite a few of the early black and white ones are currently missing.
Definitely superior to the Equalizer, which was just the A team with an old Brit as the team, sort of a B team.

I'm enjoying watching Callan on Talking pictures, great character and Lonely made a good side kick too. Ahh yes! Lonely was played by Russell (Popeye from Sweeney Ep I Want The Man) Hunter wasn't he? I'd forgot he was in this. A side splitting performance from Russell in the Minder episode "In" where he played Billy The Ferret. Gene.

"Don't mess with me Ferret", bangs head, "sorry Billy!"
I remember finding Callan a bit on the shouty side when I saw it on dvd some years ago. Woodward was always 'big' but combined with Patrick Mower who isn't averse to raising his voice & in particular the actor who played Callan's boss 'Hunter', William Squire, who had one volume- loud, it could get pretty noisy. I liked the scenes with Lonely best, that partnership is remembered for a reason, perhaps even the show might not have endured without it?
