Yes, I like him too. He can play quite a variety of parts and I think he would have been good in The Sweeney if he had been around then.

Good post Davey and I quite like Robert too and not just for Trainspotting/The Full Monty either.
Enjoyed his roles in Face and Looking After jojo particularly and he's also turned up in other things I've liked too. Always seems a bit underrated and off the radar compared to the usual 'luvvie' set perhaps he doesn't quite fit in with them/doesn't come from their background either. Suppose he and the work he's done/doing doesn't really fit in with the stereotypical British/English (sic) and increasingly so period based stuff we're getting right now which is a big shame IMHO as there's room for things other than this style too!
Here's a trailer for Face, wow can't believe it's over 22 years since this was made.

Robert Carlyle would definitely have made a good character in The Sweeney. I reckon he could do a copper but his strength would be in playing a lead villain. He would have been equally at home on any of the top three shows from back then.

Yes I agree Del Robert might have been a good addition to a brought back Sweeney if it had come back in the mid/late 80's. Might have just been a generation out of step with the series/main cast but still managed to have a fairly decent role in Taggart and no he wasn't the murderer LOL!
What he would have been a good addition to cast of was mid/late 90's series Thief Takers probably as one of the coppers. He did have a similar one-off role in 99 to 1 with Leslie Grantham so would certainly could have taken on one of the roles that Reece Dinsdale, Brendan Coyle and Robert Wilcox had and might have raised the standard of the show... although on the whole it's not too bad IMO if perhaps nothing spectacular. This was around the time of Trainspotting, Face, jojo etc. so maybe he was approached for it and some similar stuff and too busy for it.
Robert's just one of those actors I like probably because he's natural and understated... although I can't stand Emma Thompson who's in Barney Thompson with him.
