Kind of agree with you Del most covers tend to be lazy sell out cash ins the lowest common denominator in pop music IMHO and the likes X Factor etc fully exploit the market for them. M People? Their cover per se isn't the worst it is just the original is so much better and doesn't really add to it. Always felt M People generally just turned into a bland pop band in the end similar to the likes of Lighthouse Family... making boring pedestrian music. What I don't get is why the public buy into some of this tosh when they know its bloody awful... They're the first to criticise anyone who likes anything alternative, new or cutting edge?

Awkward one this one, although written by Leo Sayer, this was originally recorded and released by Roger Daltrey but then Leo went and recorded it himself so I suppose Leo Sayer's is the cover version. Anyway, the bottom line is that I think it is a poor copy of Roger's as Leo doesn't have the same vocal range in this as Roger has:
Here for comparison is Roger Daltrey's version:

Remember hearing Roger's version when travelling on the underground just after it was released, some denim clad long haired rocker was listening to it on his little transistor radio. It was much more common back then for the same song to be covered by several artists at the same time too. I still think Roger is actually very underated as a singer in some ways. For me he's up there with the best. Villain

Yes it was common in the 60s to re-record recent hits. The Shadows above isn't all bad it's just the chorus which sounds silly . That deaf dumb and blind kid part sounds fumbled. It's like Hank is quickly knocking out the notes before he drops the Strat

I can not stand any cover of any song by The Beatles. I do not like "Let 'em in" by Billy Paul. Currently, there is a new version of "A Spaceman Came Travelling" which is just awful. I mean, if you're going to cash in on the Christmas market, at least write your own guff. I heard a particularly horrendous version of "Diamonds" (Rihanna) on the Radio yesterday, just awful and don't get me started on Tom Odell's cover of "Piano Man" by Billy Joel. Personally, I don't think cover versions should be allowed. Artists would not put up with someone copying their work or writers etc, why is it accepted in song? Doesn't work in film either, Italian Job or The Sweeney anyone?? There was a whole album of Beatles covers on All This and World War 2, wasn't there? Around series 3 of Sweeney I think.

I remember laughing at one you flagged up somewhere else Sam . The Shadows cover of Pinball Wizard It is even more dire than that Derek, The Shadows' version is a cover of the "Pinball Wizard / See Me, Feel Me" medley that was done by The New Seekers, itself a candidate for the Cover versions Room 101:
Apologies if I've already posted this one but I think it is worthy of a second mention for Room 101.
Sam.

Yes there was. Rod Stewart did a version of Get Back which was released as a single in late 76. I didn't think his version was bad personally.
