Great pictures from one of the best years of the 70s, thanks to GC for sourcing, thanks to Simon Templar for hosting, and thanks to Gene for the follow-up information.
Sparky is correct about the street furniture etc but I always look first at the vehicles. Look at the cars that we never see anymore: the burgundy Fiat 128(?), the Morris Oxford / Austin Cambridge, and most of all the Gas liveried Morris Marina van. Are there any Marina vans left in existence? What a great car that would be to have at a classic car show with full Gas livery and a set of fitters tools etc in the back.

I expect the bloke who filmed that Pathe film earlier in the thread had been to see 'Confessions Of A Driving Instructor' & 'Clockwork Nympho' the previous day. Look at those two white haired men in suits making a beeline for the cinema

I've never heard of Clockwork Nympho but guessing it's a porn version of Clockwork Orange which is a somewhat disturbing prospect

Agree with Sam on the vehicles, the one which stands out is the Marina van, I like seeing the once commonplace which is now virtually extinct. To me, things like this are more evocative of the period than things like Rollses and Bentleys, nice though they are.

Fabulous photos and always great to see these and thanks to GC for finding them in the first place and Saint for uploading them, and then to Gene to for the present day updates. I too often make a bee line for the vehicles and cars, and the 70's saw slowly more and more overseas imported cars appearing on the roads, witness, the Fiats, Datsuns, Renault 5, BMW 2002/1602, Citroen GS estate, etc, amongst the more expected MK1 Transit vans, Bedford CF's, Cortinas, Capris, Marinas and Minis.
Wondered why there were a at least a couple of photos of the Eros cinema too! Nice to see that many of these buildings at least survive, shame that Ind Coope pub is not still a pub, that looked very inviting and would have been great for a post 4:3 TV meet stop off point!
I notice too the old clothes shop advertising "Clothes from the 1920's and 1930's", as that would have been the "retro" shop of its day. Working out the maths, that same shop today, could specialise now in "Clothes from 1960's and 1970's" or just as easily 1970's and 1980's! The latter decades mentioned are now the same time period today, as the 20's and 30's were in the 70's!

Look at those two white haired men in suits making a beeline for the cinema I'd have loved to have worked for Pathe - apart from covering major stories they also spent spare time filling the Stock Shots library too so were left to use their imaginations.
