It is remarkable to think that it was exactly 38 years ago today that we lost Yootha Joyce at the young age of 53. A wonderful actress, Yootha appeared in many of my favourite TV shows and films including Man About The House, Steptoe & Son, On The Buses and perhaps the role she is most famous for, Mildred Roper in George & Mildred. As I'm sure many of you know, Yootha was once married to Gynn (Dave the barman in Minder) Edwards, who also passed away this year. I remember talking at length with John Lyons a few years back about Yootha, and he remembered her with nothing but fondness. In fact, I don't think I've ever read anything to the contrary. She was also very close to her screen husband Brian Murphy in real life and very close to Norman Eshley who played Jeffrey Fourmile in the hit series. RIP Yootha and thanks for the legacy of entertainment you left us all. Gene.

A respectful tribute Gene, sad to think that it was at such an early age and only four days after her 53rd birthday.
To think that had she lived she'd be 91 now!

Yes Gene a wonderful tribute to Yootha a wonderful actress who will always be close to our hearts.
What a shame that she couldn't have had another ten or twenty years at least.

Yootha would have been a natural on Coronation Street too, I’m sure. She had that natural matriarchal authority. I think that’s where her comedy came from. Yootha makes me laugh even now, many years from her past. She’s had a biography published although I believe, it’s been hard to fill the gaps. Yootha Joyce is a giant of 70s pop culture/comedy/ and as time goes by her work will be a reminder of that era. RIP

Definitely one of my favourite actresses, she had great presence & warmth on screen, as well as a sadness & she could do both comedy & serious roles equally well. Brilliant casting to pair her with Brian Murphy, has there been a better husband & wife act on tv? Not conventionally attractive but with her large, expressive eyes & full mouth she could turn on the sex appeal when she wanted to.

A great tribute to her there, Gene. So sad she died at a relatively young age. I remember her appearing on the game show Give Us a Clue shown just before or just after she had died. Vi

She was excellent in Man about the House and George and Mildred. Never remember seeing her in anything else. Sad loss.
