What is it with soaps? Is that where all previously good quality actors / actresses wind up for their pension? I just found out tonight that Nigel Havers is in Coronation Street! Why? Is he that desperate? When he is mentioned I always think of programs such as The Charmer, Don't Wait Up, and A Perfect Hero. But Coronation Street? Really? Sam. I hear Maureen Lipman is joining Coronation Street too! The Saint

Similar, in my mind, to footballers going to play in the USA at the end of their careers to get one last pay off. The standard of football is probably about Conference level, if that, but the money is good.

I think this is Nigel Havers third or fourth stint in Coronation Street. There have been some outstanding actors who have performed in Eastenders too. Ian McKellen was in a soap for a while several years back.
It must seriously irk some of our better actors, the amount of money no marks are getting paid year in year out in the trash.
Soaps and quizzes seem to totally dominate TV schedules these days.

Some very respectable actors turn up on soaps, the most surprising to me was Timothy West playing Danny Dyer's dad Having said that Danny Dyer was once directed by Harold Pinter, one of Britain's most respected playwrights. Another odd one is Freddie Jones in Emmerdale. Actors once shunned soaps, now they're regarded as 'institutions' like panto. TV ads were the same until the likes of Olivier & Orson Wellles started doing them. Of course actors need to work & there never seems to be enough work to go round in this country, hence you had top actors appearing in horror films in the 70s. More unlikely Coronation Street actors are Edward De Souza & Robert Vaughan.

I think they are just ticking boxes in a "I've done it all" kind of way.

They pay well and they don't end so it's a pension for many in the game. Makes me laugh how the soap's keep one or two characters as old as the furniture around. These people must have seen and been through so much tragedy and yet they never leave the street, the square, the farm etc.

Anyone who starts in soaps and has a bit of talent usually bails too. Suranne Jones and Sarah Lancashire spring to mind, Michelle Keegan also seems to have moved on from it as well, although in her case her dazzling looks no doubt help

Far too good for that. I’ve just finished Scott & Bailey starring both of them, which was very enjoyable. Though it didn’t really finish!
