Again I eagerly watched A2A from the start from Feb 2008. And enjoyed them too, not missing an ep right up until series3 in 2010.
Odd though as I have a car club mate who was only really interested in LOM and just wanted to watch it for the period detail and not really interested in "Why Sam was there" and then didn't bother with series 2!
Another mate enjoyed A2A from the start and all the way through but didn't know anything about LOM and admitted he hadn't picked up on it! There are some people that have done that but not sure if my mate has since seen LOM on DVD since. I had to explain a little bit of the back story to him, that Gene, Ray and Chris were in LOM previously and it was in 1973 and he drives a Cortina in that. Also explained, the basic premise of a modern day Police officer being sent back in time was used back then.
I remember in the Newspapers rumours flying around after LOM S2 finished that they were considering a 3rd series and quite quickly it was decided that we would pick up the story in the 80's sometime. I'm sure I also read that Glenister was interested from the start (or maybe in a 3rd series of LOM) and even John Simm was considering it but he later decided to call it quits so they got Keeley Hawes in.
I wonder whether a "LOM Series 3" would have been a good idea had Simms decided to stay on and if they kept in the 70's and maybe moved it on to 1974? Some LOM fans evidently wanted that when they decided they wouldn't bother with A2A. And the idea could have been different if they made A2A differently with "Sam Tyler" still being around and continuing to live through the new timeline and still be around in the early 80's............
And I mentioned before on this forum, I agree with others that I'd like to see a sort of "Life on Ashes" in between feature length episode set in 1977 approx John Simm returning to the role. I'm sure with todays make up techniques they could make Phil and John look they'd aged only 4 years from 1973.

I can understand watching LOM initially for period detail etc but find it hard to imagine not getting caught up in the story! Weirder still for someone to have watched A2A without knowing anything about what went before ... unless you particularly love the 80s or something! I'd read somewhere - I'm almost convinced it was a quote from John Simm himself, in fact - that he didn't want to do any more because his family were in London and it was a long time away and then when Ashes started and was in London he was a bit miffed (though I don't think in a serious way). I imagine LOM series 3 would have been heading towards a similar conclusion as A2A series 3 did - but Morgan rather than Keats. At the same time, I almost can't imagine that character being quite so evil ... certainly not so insane. The hatred is boiling up again just THINKING about him. My brother is a street lighting engineer. It is his dream job and he's been obsessed with lighting since he was tiny. When LOM was initially broadcast, people on the street lighting forum (apparently there is such a place!) were critical of the fact that the streetlamps gave away the dates instantly, regardless of how much effort went into the set dressing! So you can never please everyone! But the thought of that does always make me smile. "How can anyone take this seriously when you've got a 1990s Gamma 69 ... etc etc"

See my Life On Mars Blooper thread Bols. There are plenty of things that are out of sync with the setting date. Feel free to add some facts about the lamp posts to that thread Life On Mars Bloopers

I'd have to get my brother to help, I think! I could probably point them out but couldn't tell you their vintage. We had some nice old concrete ones on the hill that we grew up on until the nasty council came along and replaced them. I'll see what I can do for your thread ... even if we're back to the dicey territory of making it not real! I did like the comment about it being a blurring of the lines with Sam's past and present ...
