I didn't get to watch episode 3 properly because they arrived, but I really enjoyed episode 2. I think I’ll probably watch them all again and then start reporting back. My other half’s parents obviously watched it at the time so we’re enjoying it but unfortunately I was cooking so I couldn’t follow it. I think they want to borrow it but they can’t have it until I’ve watched them! Just watched LOM where we meet Maya’s Mum (2.6?). I’m always amazed when I flip back after watching Ashes at just how different the main characters actually are - I’m unable to find any redeeming features of Ray at all but I like him much more in Ashes. Chris bless him and Gene ... I don’t think I’d have fallen for him in the 70s, let’s put it that way. He’s a lot coarser (but I do appreciate that the key reasons that we all love that character include the complete lack of PC nonsense) I just prefer the 80s version!

Just before we get this thread back on track... How are you getting on with working your way through The Sweeney Alex?
Gene.

Just before we get this thread back on track... How are you getting on with working your way through The Sweeney Alex? Gene. I’ve only watched one that I haven’t posted on the thread for and that’s because I felt like I’d missed the point of the episode so need to do a re-watch. Problem is my other half isn’t keen and we are only home at the same times! But I very much enjoy it and am still going! :)

Oh yes, and I’m waiting until I get Regan because you said it was good to watch that as soon as possible. See. I do listen

I can’t decide if I missed out or am fortunate not to have had to wait for a week between episodes and a year between series! That said, when you just binge-watch it (which wasn’t a saying in 2008/9 but there we go) it’s all over very quickly!

I first saw it when it was broadcast on BBC1.
My first dealings with it were about 12months or so before - after a phone call from a mate asking if I was available, and that he needed extra hands on some police drama shooting in Manchester. I wasn't available for it all - as at the time I was flitting between hospital with my other 1/2, as our first Son was well and truly on the way. At the time it was only one series confirmed.
None the less, at the time I never realised what the hell it was; as some stuff we were shooting in present day, then the next everyones in flares, 70s clothes and hiding satellite dishes on buildings.
Then some bloke called Peter Brayham rolled up - and everyone was having a punch up..... I'd thought that I had died, landed in 1974, somewhere in West London not far from a Pub and a Derelict School...
Not a huge fan of using CGI, BUT - it did a fine job on Life on Mars replacing much of the glass fronted/corporate Manchester.

Got into it straight away admittedly as I saw Gene Hunt as a throw back to the Sweeney era

It must have been quite bizarre for any of the cast/crew who remembered 1973 (or near enough) the first time round. I know we didn’t watch it live, although I know we were aware of it. There was a reason my dad didn’t want to watch it and I can’t remember what it was. It might have been John Simm! My poor parents delayed the inevitable for a couple of years!

There were a couple who would have been apprentices back in 1973. The Art Director & Certain Directors (who of course weren't around in 1983, never mind 1973) did take advice from some of the older members of the Crew, Extras and those that were there. In particular with words that were in common use back then - things you'd wouldn't hear much these days.
The first time I had heard anyone referred to as a "Div" in years, was by Ray Carling. There was an idea amongst some members of the crew, that on the final day of the shoot for S1, everyone should roll up in 70s clothes. It never did happen - though it would have been great!
When I caught wind of this, I had a quick flick through the Behind the Scenes photos from the "Sweeney" - and was shocked to find that those Crew Members were generally wearing the same as we do today (Dodgy waterproof anoraks, jeans and T-Shirts!!) Looking at pics from my Dad Roadie days of the 70s, they all wore Bell Bottom jeans, platforms and Muscle Vests and tended to look like the bands they worked for. There is an S1 Cast & Crew photo that was taken on the last day of shooting. Another excuse to go in the loft and see if it's amongst the paperwork.
