As it's one of the most famous TV shows ever made, I thought we should have a thread where you can post your comments about this classic cult TV series. The first episode 'Arrival' was shown in September 1967.

I watched this series when it was repeated on TV a while ago and enjoyed it but I could never get my head around the end when he unmasked the leader and saw his own face. Very deep I guess, anyone care to dumb it down for me?

I watched a lot of these a few years ago when they were repeated on ITV4 (I think) and really liked them. Problem was I didn't know if they were run in their proper order, and then the series disappeared from the schedules before i saw the last episode. Knowing what ITV do with the other series like MInder, Pro's and Sweeney, Its a good bet that they were shown out of sequence.

Very deep I guess, anyone care to dumb it down for me? I think a lot of viewers were baffled by the revealing of No.1 as an image of NO.6 himself at the end of the last episode. McGoohan tried to explain it in an interview in 1977: "No.1 was depicted as an evil, governing force in this Village. So, who is this No.1? We just see the No.2's, the sidekicks. Now this overriding, evil force is at its most powerful within ourselves and we have constantly to fight it, I think, and that is why I made No.1 an image of No.6. His other half, his alter ego".

Thanks Vienna, I understand but it still seems a little hard to swallow. He was kept there by himself? Anyway, I did enjoy this series despite my being mentally challenged

No worries, Steve The 1977 interview McGoohan did on Canadian TV is available on YouTube. It is not very good quality, however, it is quite interesting in what he has to say about the show a decade after it was first shown. Also, he and the interviewer are smoking throughout the discussion!

There was some continuity issues because some episodes were not shown in production order.
Indeed it was not shown at a consistent time across the ITV network. Although AFAIK each region followed the same agreed transmission order?
'The Prisoner' is compelling, but the ending is baffling and then disappointing. McGoohan was too clever for his audience. I see his point about people needing to break free from the imaginary ties that bind them in life - this message does come across.
But the ordinary viewer also wanted a straightforward explanation. They wanted to know why and where 'The Village' existed, and this was not explained.

I somehow knew that there would be a thread for this series already! My other half watched it when he was a kid (I stress not live!) and got me to watch it a few years back. We completely disagree on the ending - he thinks it's great and I was massively disappointed! Evidently it splits opinion everywhere, if this forum is anything to go by.

Alex, this thread hasn't been updated for nearly three years so nice to see someone post something on it. I haven't watched it for about five years now but I still have the special edition Blu-ray box set and Andrew Pixley book, which is pretty informative for fans of the series.

Brilliantly original programme, which I watched when it was repeated on ITV in early 1977, and once more some time in the 90s. I think it was stretched out slightly too long, and it gave the impression that the ending hadn’t been properly worked out and it was busked a bit.
I visited Portmeirion in about 2005 and it’s a great location
