Yeah saw that Pete Wylie TOTP performance last night too. Not really freaked out by it but just thought it looked a bit dated a bit clichéd - even for 1986. Probably a more straight up performance would've been better IMO as it is a fairly good song from that era.

Saw some of a 1986 edition earlier, I was surprised to see during Pete Wylie's studio performance of 'Sinful', three models dressed as nuns with their habits split down the sides to reveal their legs wearing fishnets. Maybe in a video you could've got away with it but surely people must've complained about this, no way would it ride today on early evening tv. Oddly enough there were complaints by viewers but because of the silly comment John Peel makes at the end of the performance Pete's doing a gig in Worthing in December. Wondering whether to go. Anyone seen him recently?
Any other thoughts?

I think my brother had planned to see him last year or earlier but the gig was cancelled at the last minute due to poor ticket sales.

If you like old episodes of Top of the Pops, you like podcasts, and you don't mind a bit of swearing. Actually quite a lot of swearing, then look no further than....
Chart Music
It's a Podcast by Al Needham who invites two ex Melody Maker journalists every episode to deconstruct an old episode of TOTP
Remarkably an episode often goes over the three hour mark
Even more remarkably it's frequently fascinating and hilarious
They really hit their stride when deconstructing a 70s or early 80s episode, but then I would say that.
Their accompanying website.....
...has related videos for each episode
If you meet the criteria above then I can pretty much guarantee you'll love it

I've been watching the 1988 reruns of TOTP
Often truly dreadful
I say watching, more often fast forwarding through an episode and just lingering on the odd, occasional decent tune
There was some absolute dreck in the top ten in 1988 - very little has aged well
Brother Beyond anyone? Breathe? What were the pop kids thinking?

Just had a listen to the latest Chart Music podcast, discovered that snooker player Steve Davis is in a band called The Utopia Strong. I did know he was a big music fan & has ( or had ) a massive collection of records. I think his favourite band is Magma, who are a French progressive rock band, I think he even paid for them to play live in the UK.

Music in the mid/late 80s was absolutely abysmal imo. I stopped listening to it at that time because it was so bad and only picked it up again in the mid 90s when it became tolerable again, although it's never got back to the fantastic standard it was at in the late 70s

I hope you enjoyed it Arthur
Yes, Steve Davis is quite a surprising bloke given his reputation
It's the quiet ones you've got to watch

100%. Chart music at any rate.
There was always other worthwhile music going on in the margins.
The NME's tracks and albums of the year for 1985 (an 80s year plucked out of the air) has a few nuggets...

There was a thread on here that accompanied the TOTP episodes as they made their way through the 70's and 80's but as you'll see, the interest waned pretty quickly once the mid 80's episodes arrived. Very poor fare it has to be said.
