I happened to hear another cover version that I prefer to the original on Radio 2 the other day which is Jimmy Nail's version of Love don't live here anymore which was released in 1985 and reached #3 in the UK singles chart. The original version by Rose Royce was released in 1978.

Good call John!
I also prefer Jimmy Nails version of I Can't Be Myself to the original by Merle Haggard.

The original by Rose Royce is a fantastic soul ballad and, IMO, is superior to Nail's '85 version. It also did slightly better reaching No.2 in the UK charts. Vi

There's been quite a few versions of that song in different genre's. I think there was a couple of dance type remixes of it. If done in a different genre and substantially reconstructed it makes it harder to compare to the original like for like.
For the record though I'd go for the original on this track.
A few versions of it:
MADGE 1995
SEAL 2011 a much better version than Madge.
Jimmy Nail 1985 A good cover this and its also better than Madge for me.
My fav cover of it has to be this one from 1990 by Double Trouble.

Might be on my own here but i prefer the Lemonheads version of Mrs Robinson over the Simon and Garfunkle version. Also The Ataris version of Don Henleys Boys of Summer is pretty good too.

I also think this cover of Robyns Dancing on my own is much better. Slowed down and acoustic does it good.

I'm not a fan of cover versions, I'm not sure that too many have been better than the original. I especially don't like it when anyone covers The Beatles such as Wet, Wet, Wet or Suggs or Candy Flip foe example. Some things just can't be bettered so why bother. Smacks of cash in and lack of imagination.

I agree that The Lemonheads version of Mrs Robinson is pretty good but much prefer Don Henley's original version of Boys of Summer to the Ataris version. Steed

There's nothing that even gets close to the original.
