I had the Father Abraham with the Smurfs LP, being 7 in 1978 unlike some of the forum's older members. I had some little plastic smurf figures as well, not sure what became of them but the LP is in the loft. The one song I remember off the LP is called 'Smurfing Beer' with the child friendly lyric 'beer, beer, smurfing beer, you don't get drunk & it isn't dear'.

Bit of a shameless effort there from the Rezillos to guarantee a TOTP spot I too love Northern Lights and Superneture too which, incidentally, was played on Radio 2 earlier today, still no Yellow Dog though

As the weather starts to get colder and the nights start to get longer, we move into September. I remember having to go to St Johns College in Manchester a couple of nights a week to start the Insurance Institute exams for my job, which I had started at in at the end of June. It was as boring as you can imagine, but a couple of beers afterwards in the Students Union bar made it bearable, that and the fact that a rather nice girl from the Provincial Insurance in Bolton called Lesley sat next to me, remember walking back to Manchester Victoria station with her, she getting the train to Bolton, me the much missed old Manchester-Bury class 504 electric units to Radcliffe (Google them if youre bored!) after a few drinks with her in the bar....
Anyhow back to the matter in hand:
Exile - Kiss you all over* Frankie Valli - Grease* Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden* one of my favourite punk records John Travolta & Olivia Newton John - Summer Nights* Blondie - Picture This* - possibly my favourite Blondie track The Motors - Forget about you* - don't think they did anything after this, shame Status Quo - Again and again* I like the Quo but they are a bit samey Abba - Summer Night City* Sylvester - You make me feel mighty real* Rose Royce - Love don't live here anymore* The Jam - David Watts/A bomb in Wardour Street* Dooleys - A rose has to Die* - please indulge my Kathy Dooley thing!!! Crystal Gayle - Talking in your sleep* Stranglers - Walk on by* Patrick Juvet - Got a feeling*
Great memories, great music, great month

November. Now this really is a treat!!
Boomtown Rats - Rat Trap* - possibly my favourite record of the whole year Olivia Newton John - Hopelessly Devoted to you* John Travolta - Sandy* The Cars - My Best Friends girl* Frankie Miller - Darlin* Rod Stewart - Do ya think Im sexy?* Donna Summer - MacArthur Park* Boney M - Rasputin* Dan Hartman - Instant Replay* Three Degrees - Givin up Givin in* ELO - Sweet Talkin Woman* Blondie - Hangin on the telephone* Elton John - Part time love* Dean Friedman - Lucky Stars* Patrick Juvet - I love America* Jam - Down in the tube station at midnight* Buzzcocks - Ever fallen in love with someone* - another of my favourites of the year Streetband - Toast* Novelty record but not bad Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip - I lost my heart to a starship trooper* - guilty pleasure? Elkie Brooks - don't cry out loud* Elvis Costello - Radio Radio* Chic - Le Freak* Leo Sayer - I cant stop loving you* Dollar - Shooting Star* - another guilty pleasure candidate, but I think its a brilliantly produced record, and how hot was Thereze Bazar?! Bee Gees - Too much heaven*
Fantastic mix of new wave and disco, 1978 at its best. Funny how a record can revive a memory of what you were doing at the time. Our next door neighbour at that time had an old, battered Austin A60 and one cold sunday afternoon in either November or December 1978, it wouldn't start. I was outside the front of the house so walked across to see if I could help, and the two of us managed to get it going after a bit of fiddling under the bonnet. The car radio was playing Elvis Costello's Radio Radio at the time! - another one of my favourites for the year.

Lets wrap up 1978 with December, more great stuff:
Boney M - Marys Boy Child Village People - YMCA* - played a lot but I still like it Barbara Streisand & Neil Diamond - You don't bring me flowers - mmm, 50/50 on this Racey - Lay your love on me* John Travolta - Greased Lightnin* - went to see Grease in December 78 at the now closed cinema in Bury Musique - in the bush* Chaka Khan - Im Every woman* The Clash - Tommy Gun* Elton John - Song for Guy* Ian Dury - Hit me with your rhythim stick* - brilliant combination of disco and new wave on one record, very evocative of this period I always think Leo Sayer - Raining in my heart Hot Chocolate - Ill put you together again* Earth Wind & fire - September* Billy Joel - My life* Sally Oldfield - Mirrors*
What a year!!!

Enjoyed reading through this thread Cartman, I have to agree with you that 1978 was a top year in chart history.
Having watched all of the TOTP repeats 1978 is the best year hands down. It's been great to see the detail of 1978 on those repeats and laid out here on this thread .

Cheers Del, yes, I think this late 70s period was absolutely outstanding musically. There are a couple of records which weren't big hits which didn't get into the top 40 which Ive just remembered too, one by Terri De Sario called Nothings gonna keep me away from you, a disco track from towards the end of the summer, and Eddy Vortex by the Steve Gibbons Band from the early part of the summer that I liked too.
1979 was very nearly as good. What do you and the rest of the guys think, should I do 79 as well?

My wife and I started dating while we were still at school back in March '78 when we were still 16 and it is great going back through those early years of our relationship musically, evoking so many memories.
Sam.

Ok then, here goes, into January 79. Not that much new stuff really, quite a lot of the chart carried over from December 78:
Paul Evans - Hello this is Joanie* A bit of an odd one, but I quite liked it, in an odd way Blondie - Heart of Glass* an all time great from the brilliant Parallel Lines album Three Degrees - Woman in love* Barron Knights - A Taste of aggro - Pretty crap IMO Shalamar - Take that to the bank* Driver 67 - Car 67* another odd one Dr Feelgood - Milk and Alcohol*
Ive noticed that, in general, January seems to be a bit of a quiet month and that the amount of new, and good, stuff increases as the year goes on.
