Anyone else on here like this? Its quite often shown late at night on TCM, one of the film channels and I think its a brilliant film, directed by Stanley Kubrick. Its in two halves, the first half is where the recruits are at the training camp in the USA, and the second half is where they have been sent out to Vietnam.
I think the first half is the best bit. The Drill sergeant, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, played by R Lee Ermey, is one of my all time favourite film characters, he is completely off his tree! Apparantly, he was brought in by Kubrick as an advisor, but he decided that he was so good that he just put him in the film and let him just more or less ad lib. Some of the stuff he comes out with is just unbelievable.

Was the second half of the film partially filmed in Southall Gasworks? Like The Sweeney, Professionals etc.

I haven't seen this one properly. I did watch the first ten minutes years ago, but I stopped watching it after the bit where the soldier shoots himself. I really will to give it another go. Stanley Kubrick was a brilliant director though, I love his other films, Strangelove,, 2001 etc. For me Space Oddysey is one of the very best films of all time. Doctor Strangelove is brilliant too. (I think a lot of us have forgotten these days how horrific a nuclear war would be.)

Full Metal Jacket is one of the best Vietnam films around but have to content it's not for the screamish and you have to be in the mood for it too. Yeah I agree with Cartman that Sergeant Hartman/R Lee Ermey is brilliant too.
