I've now watched number three and still feel a bit dissatisfied with it all. It just doesn't quite work. Too knockabout to be a serious drama and yet not really especially funny or compelling.
In this episode, Hazell and the Walking Blur, Michael Elphick turns up as a major gangster who talks in weird mix of French and English. Totally ludicrous and completely lacking any credibility.
I dunno, there's plenty to like, but I find it more annoying than enjoyable

I got hold of a book about the making of series 1 ( "Hazell The Making Of A TV Series" ) on ebay a while ago, it's co-written by one of the writers who did the 'Euston Films Ltd' book & is really in-depth for a somewhat forgotten tv show. I used to have a copy of this years ago until it got mistakenly placed in a pile of books destined for the charity shop It was a great guide to the series IIRC, particularly about the writing process. I think there was some conflict between Richard Harris the script editor and the producers which led to him quitting mid first series. There was also a reprint of some re-write notes sent to one of the writers from June Roberts who didn't like one of the female characters along the lines of "save the chauvinistic downtrodden types for your Sweeney scripts"! I also recall Gordon Williams commenting that he was sceptical in the initial stages as he had already had a novel "butchered" by film people (Siege Of Trencher's Farm/Straw Dogs). I did see a documentary on Gordon Williams and Terry Venables in the late 70s, possibly The South Bank Show. Terry said he had to defend criticism from cynics who thought he was the junior of the writing partnership in the novels. "The cheeky snappy dialogue will be my bits. A paragraph with 50 words to describe a tree will probably be Gordon's !"

It's a very thorough book aimed more at students studying tv & film, I doubt there are many books about a single series of one tv show.
June Roberts had a point, there were very few female writers around then & parts for women in tv series weren't great. If this is the same person she edited Thames TV's in house newspaper- thames.today/author/juneroberts

I don't fancy paying the price of the edition that's on Amazon at the moment.... £149 !

I paid £40 for a copy back in 2018, although I think it was from AbeBooks not Amazon. However, they don't seem to have any copies available online at present. Vi
