Hazell is an overlooked show, Nicholas Ball is really good & the scripts are great, having said that I've still only got series 1 on dvd. I got hold of a book about the making of series 1 ( "Hazell The Making Of A TV Series" ) on ebay a while ago, it's co-written by one of the writers who did the 'Euston Films Ltd' book & is really in-depth for a somewhat forgotten tv show.

Oi! Get on to the author, where's Sweeney Todd Flying Squad?
Or was it made up for the series?

Blimey, I reserved a book from the library which I picked up yesterday, 'They Drive By Night' by James Curtis written in 1938 & it has an introduction that mentions its early use of rhyming slang with reference to 'Sweeny' for Flying Squad & even Thaw/Waterman are namechecked. So yes 'Sweeny or Sweeney Todd=Flying Squad' goes back to the 30's or earlier.
I didn't recognise a lot of the slang in the Hazell annual, Doctor Crippen=dripping, Jenny Linda=window, Dolly Varden=garden ( Dolly Varden is apparently a character in Dickens' novel 'Barnaby Rudge' ), Round The Houses=trousers, Soldier Bold=cold, On The Floor=poor, not heard any of them before.
Some of them seem confused, they have jam jar=car, but then also la di da=car, usually it's la di da=cigar.
Tin tac=racing track, tin tack usually means sack Bottle of scotch=watch, gold watch=scotch is usual & kettle for watch.

You've caught them out Arthur. They probably had a deadline and thought it's only kids who get this for Christmas, they won't know.

I wonder how a Hazell film would have done if it was released in 1980/81. Seeing they'd done the same with those 2 Sweeney spin-off features, it could have happened. What sort of plot do you think they could have done? Maybe one where he is hired to locate two runaway teenagers and when he tracks them down, he finds out that they have been ensnared/recruited by a gangster who is involved in some very sinister operations. Hazell makes it his top priority to save those lads and tells Choc Minty about the main villain. Could have been good and maybe it could have been rated AA or X.
BTW in a fight, who do you think would win? Jim Hazell or George Carter/Terry McCann? How would Hazell also fare against Regan, Bodie & Doyle?
