I remember Van Der Valk a bit Vienna, but I didn't watch all of the series. I heard that T.P. Was showing them again, and I'm going to try and watch some of them.
I intend be get the series from Network myself in a future sale, and I laughed when you said that you haven't even opened the box set yet, because that's exactly what I do a lot of the time, we should open them really and make sure they play properly.
By the way Vi do you know if all the Van Der Valk episodes survived, or were some lost ?
Charles.

They're showing 1970 Armchair Theatre plays each Sunday, tomorrow it's 'Say Goodnight To Your Grandma' written by & starring Colin Welland.
I wonder if talkingpictures have struck a deal with Network as lately they seem to be showing a lot of stuff released by them, Callan included.
This Sunday's episode features John Thaw. Never seen these before but I must say I am enjoying them. The ones with Colin Welland and Keith Barron were very good.

I have watched an episode or two in the past, thought it was ok-ish. Barry Foster has said that he was always getting confused for John Thaw by the public. I think of Foster as the killer in 'Frenzy' & before that an equally sleazy type in 'Twisted Nerve' ( the film that inspired Hitchcock to cast him in 'Frenzy' ), more than as Van Der Valk, there's something sinister about him. One of the great theme tunes of course, maybe too good as the rest of the show has to live up to it. Same here, I did watch it odd times, when it was originally on. I remember one series, which I think might have bee a one of the late ones, the introductory titles showed Van Der Valk driving round Amsterdam in a mark 4 Cortina. I've never seen any since then (77/78 ish from memory) The theme tune was exceptionally good and was released as a single in 73 by the Simon Park Orchestra and reached number 1

Strangely enough I've never seen VDV properly or a full episode myself either. May try and give it a butchers when it's on TPTV although got to admit it's never been one that's really gripped or interested me.

I’ve checked VDV out a bit more on Wikipedia and there were apparently four series. 1972,73 then a long gap and the next one was in autumn 1977, which is the only one I remember. Another one was done in 1991 which I have no recollection of at all.
The 1977 series which I watched was done by Euston Films, coincidentally filling a gap between series 3 and 4 of The Sweeney.

My impression has always been, maybe wrongly, that it VDV is somewhat bland. Bit like Angel Delight, if anyone has an ad for that.

True Three Litre I may have not watched it properly based on repeats I saw a few years back and the early 90's version which may have made me come to the same conclusion. Always see Barry Foster as McQueen from Sweeney! too.
